Power adapter backup

Hello,

I have few devices from MT and I would like to buy spare power adapter. Im not sure which will be the best?

For example AX2 has power adapter 24V 1,2A but AX3 has 24V 1,5A. Is it ok to power AX3 with power adapter from AX2?

Thank you

Generally yes until you start to push the pedal to the metal … and then it might be AX3 requires more juice then that adapter can provide.
It can go up to 38W according to spec. At 24V that’s 1.6A (which is odd since it would mean theoretically the supplied PSU is not sufficient in some cases ??).
AX2 goes up to 27W, that 1.2A PSU is sufficient there.
Also keep in mind AX2 is capped at 864MHz frequency for the same CPU, AX3 can go up to 1800MHz.
Power requirements will shoot up as well then.

Best case it will reboot under stress (something I was reminded of today you should keep in the back of your mind).
Worst case you might see sporadic wrong behavior and then go around like a dog chasing its tail to find the reason.

Holtoven,

thank you for answer. How about the opposite? Can I power AX2 with adapter from AX3?

Yes, You can. Voltages must match, in this case both are 24V. Amperage should be equal or more. In general, amperage indicates maximum current you can draw from PSU.

Logically thinking:
When AX3 runs at low processor speed, it should consume more or less the same as AX2.
So yes.

It also depends on your environment. The power requirement of most MikroTIk devices is based on their support for PoE OUT i.e. you can power your AX2 from your AX3 when it is properly connected and configured.
That means the worst case for the AX3 powersupply is to power both an AX2 and an AX3.
When you do not do that, power requirements are substantially reduced.
