Powering ADSL modem from PoE-out port on RB2011UiAS-IN

Hi!

I have RB2011UiAS-IN as internet router at home. My main provider works over 100 mbit/s Ethernet w/DHCP and runs just fine majority of the time. But once in a month (sometimes more often) problems occur and I can have half a day without internet. To cope with this I added one more provider (ADSL based) and reused my good-old Zyxel ADSL modem/router. It was set to bridge mode, connected to Mikrotik and PPPoE client added to Router OS. This setup also works fine and now I can use two of the providers on demand. Especially good thing (at least in my plans) was that with ADSL tariff I selected billing is only for the days, when internet is used, so when main provider is up and running I need not to pay for alternative. So when main provider works fine PPPoE connection to ADSL provider is dropped.
Pity though, was to find out, that just disabling PPPoE connection to provider is not enough and to be sure not to be billed provider requires to physically switch off adsl router. Which is inconvenient in many aspects. :frowning:

My idea now is to try using PoE on RB2011 Eth10 and power ADSL modem from it on demand.
I found a couple of devices from TP-Link to do the job: PoE receiver TL-POE10R (able to output 5, 9 or 12 V from its DC port depending on the hardware switch on it) and ADSL2+ router TD-8816 (which can be powered from TL-POE10R being set to 5 V). This pare seems to be compatible according to http://www.tplink.com/ie/article/?id=167

Problem is I can’t understand if Mikrotik will work with above mentioned PoE setup, cause (unlike TP-Link) RB2011 is not 802.3af compatible and is told to output to the PoE port the same voltage as it receives (24 V from wall adapter in my case), which is double the top value TP-Link is working with. Even more, tp-link site says, that device automatically shuts-off when over/under voltage occurs.

Can anyone clarify if this can work?

If it is true, that Mikrotik RB2011 devices pass to PoE port on them the same voltage as they receive (and they are told to work from 8-30 V wall adapters) than maybe I can find another 12 V adapter with compatible jack and connect it to Mikrotik instead of the 24 V one which was in the box? Can such change in input voltage somehow affect Mikrotik RB2011 performance: e.g. heating, stability, slower speeds, etc.?
Of course its “health” and overall stability is more important to me than sporadically used ADSL alternative. “My precious!” :laughing:
