PPC/TILE on RouterOS v6 vs v7 Long-Term – experiences and CCR1009 upgrade advice?

Hi everyone,

I'd like to hear your experiences with old MikroTik architectures (PPC and TILE) on RouterOS v6 and v7 Long-Term. I have both, and I'm not sure what to do.

PPC:
I have a PPC device that had serious issues on v7. Even after resetting the configuration, it still wouldn't work properly. After updating to a newer v7 build, my original config worked again. This looks like a RouterOS v7 system issue, not a config issue.

PPC devices are long EOL, and I suspect v7 support for them is not well tested. Has anyone else seen this on v7 LT? Is it common for PPC to fail after a config reset? Should I just stay on v6 LT for stability?

CCR1009 (TILE):
I also have a CCR1009. I've seen mixed reports about v7:

CPU usage going from ~75% to 100%

kernel errors / random reboots, fixed by downgrading to v6

upgrade failures, sometimes due to insufficient disk space

What do you recommend for CCR1009 now? Stay on v6 LT, or upgrade to v7 LT? If v7 LT, which version is safest? Any known upgrade issues?

Also, is v7 Long-Term actually ready for these older platforms, or is v6 LT still the safer choice?

Thanks for any input.

It depends on how critical that device is for you. If it's well protected from the world and "Just works" as-is, and you have no need of v7's way of doing things (new features like Wireguard, for example), then leave it alone.

Very little reason not to use v7 on a 1009, unless you're running it at 90% load under v6 and can't afford to lose a few percentage points in performance, possibly (haven't tested, not sure myself).

From a security and continuity standpoint, I've been updating all my routers to v7. If they can't handle the load after an update, they're the wrong size device for that load anyway.

I do not see any instability issues on the CCR1009 with v7, but as written the performance is a bit less. Not a problem for me.

With no traffic there is no CPU load either. Not like it has 75% load all the time.
