PPPOE 1GB - LAN to WAN throughput

Hello guys,

I recently upgraded my internet connection to 1Gb. The thing is i can not get more than 200Mb/s on my RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN. Tried both the bridge and the switch approach. On both i get 100% CPU around 200Mb/s . I have masquerade from LAN to PPPOE and no other firewall rules. Am i doing something wrong or is this a hardware limitation ?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I’m amazed that you’re getting 200Mbit/s, pretty impressive for MIPS.

Aside from the CPU, the 2011 suffers from all the GigE interfaces being on a single switch chip with a single GigE lane into the CPU. Trying to route full GigE traffic through it will fail miserably (as you’ve discovered).

I’m not sure any of the MIPS based units can handle that load, check into the 1100 or CCR to carry GigE traffic. On the 1100, you’ll need to use Ether11, 12, or 13 for the uplink.

MT needs to seriously consider a new approach to their hardware design… even the new CRS suffers from this problem. All 25 ports sharing a single GigE lane into a woefully underpowered CPU. Might be great at Layer2, but as a Layer3 device, it probably won’t do much better than the 2011, as it has the same(?) CPU (with 2x the RAM).

Good luck!

I was hoping i could use fastpath and at least double that speed. Maybe someone could point me in this direction. I cant figure how to configure the router without connection tracking enabled…

I was hoping troy was wrong, and ultimately someone will point me in a good direction. But it seems like I was once again deceived by nice specs hardware with no muscles. The community was also as advertised  getting almost one reply. God speed MikroTik, cause speed seems like something you need !

I’m not sure what you were expecting. Considering you’ve used the mikrotik before you got the gigabit connection, it should have been obvious that even at 100 mbps the cpu load goes over 50% while masquerading pppoe.

I was in the same situation with a 951g-2hnd and gigabit pppoe and was about to go for a 1100 but I realized I can build an x86 machine with better performance and more upgrade options.

I have the same setup, the speed is max around 220/220 and that is bad..
I’m not happy, this router has 1gb ports, why i have not the full speed?
