Firstly, I don’t know if this is a problem with my Mikrotik (RB4011) or with the GPON modem thing provided by my Broadband provider.
My setup is that my GPON modem is configured in pass-through or bridge mode or something like this, and my Mikrotik has a PPPoE client configured to authenticate to my broadband.
Every few hours, the broadband drops out. Currently, I’m resetting the GPON modem and it mostly comes back (if that doesn’t do the trick, I reboot the mikrotik as well, but this is maybe 1/5 times that this is necessary, or it’s just my impatience maybe and the GPON modem needs a little longer to reconnect maybe).
Just wondering if this could be an instability in the PPPoE Client and if anyone else is experiencing similar issues - I must admit, I rather suspect that the issue is on the side of my provider… but want to just eliminate everything before I properly push the topic with them.
I use pppoe more than a year with 4011.
With SFP or with media converter with same SFP, no matter.
No drops.
Before 4011 I used pppoe many years with hex s with same sfp or same media converter.
No drops.
I used PPPoE with an hEX for more than 5 years. Zero issues.
Upgraded to one RB5009 and a GPON (DFP-34X-2C2). No issues either.
The last RoS used by hEX was 7.13.x, if I’m not mistaken.
The RB5009 is running RoS 7.14.3
I think the problem could have been because I was using an SFP-to-RJ45 converter and having the SFP Port of my RB4011 as the WAN Port. I’ve jiggled around the config a little bit and now using Ether1 as the WAN Port and it’s been stable ever since.
Perhaps the SFP-to-RJ45 converter is not in good shape or something - don’t know, but not using it seems to have corrected the problem. I think I’ve got another one somewhere so if I do, I will make a test and see what happens.
