I’m connected with DSL here in Germany and I want to use my Mikrotik box as a router with bandwith shaping. I’m having quite a bit of difficulty in setting this up though. Right now I’m trying to setup a seperate network and get it functional before I hook my entire network though this. I’m currently running a Dlink router and it’s giving a DHCP address to the Mikrotik through the WAN card. Then I have a switch with a couple laptops hooked to the LAN card. I was able to get the DHCP server running and gave IP’s to the laptops. The two IP’s it gave were 192.168.0.99 and 192.168.0.98. What I don’t understand is how to properly give out DNS and route through the Mikrotik box. There is no place I can see to specify the IP for the LAN card. After some troubleshooting I realized the laptop with the IP of 192.168.0.98 had a DNS entry of 192.168.0.99! This is the IP of the other laptop. I checked the 2nd laptop and the DNS entry was 192.168.0.1. This is what is showing for the gateway address too. Coincidently, the address for my Dlink is also 192.168.0.1. I checked the settings and the Dlink only gives out addresses between 192.168.0.100-192.168.0.199. I tried going through the manual for setting up the router and just was not getting anywhere. Suddenly on my other computers we noticed the internet connection had just gone down. When I accessed the Dlink through the web interface by typing in the IP like I normally do I was quite surprised to find the Mikrotik router page instead. I then uplugged the Mikrotik from the network and rebooted the Dlink and everything was back to normal. When this strange switch happened no cables were swapped or anything of the sort.
I guess after this long explanation I’m just looking for help in getting the Mikrotik to route the internet to the two laptops and then change the method of logging on to the internet from DHCP to PPPoE which is how the German DSL is. Thanks for any help.
