When I make a pptp vpn connection my speed drops to 10 Mbps instead of 100 Mbps (home network). I notice that I go via the gateway of the external network instead of my own. Does anyone knows what I can do to change this? To change the gateway to my own gateway?

Hello, this is the default configuration. if you want your own gateway, you have to change it in the properties of your NIC, and then add a route to join your remote subnet.
You should disable ‘Use default gateway on remote network’ option in VPN settings on client computer.
How to
