I’m looking for a compatible, cheap and fast 3G USB dongle to use with Mikrotik (for example with RB951G model).
I already know Mikrotik supported hardware list [1] but I think is not exhaustive.
What’s your favorite 3G dongle?
Does anyone used TP-LINK dongles [2]?
Thank you plisken. But I’m looking for a generic and unlocked 3G dongle to use with different provider available in my country: for example TIM, Wind, Vodafone, 3.
Look on eBay - they have loads of unlocked modems. Personally, I’d go for a Sierra Wireless model such as the 320U.
Just note though, that MikroTik seem to have some issues with USB-to-WWAN (was called Direct IP). This means that most Sierra Wireless USB modems won’t be able to use the LTE interface and will be limited to about 25mbps via the PPP interface.
Any reason why you want a 3G modem instead of a mPCIe? RouterOS supports the newer 3G/4G SW mPCIe module which support LTE interface. They also use less power and have better operating temperatures.
I frequently use Mikrotik “integrated” solutions like RB951G, for example. This product line have no miniPCIe slot.
To the contrary “routerboard” solutions are rich of miniPCIe slots. This could be an interesting aspect to move to my first routerboard even though it’s a more expensive solution.
