Hello Guys,
I’m new to mikrotik router. I have a RB2011UiAS-2HnD version 6.37.1 (stable)
Need help for our VoIP setup.
We Have a asterisk server (192.168.1.2). Also we have about 20 Cicsco IP Phones 7940. (DHCP 192.168.1.x) and X-Lite software that connects to the server,
Our LAN Subnet is in Bridge1 - 192.168.1.0/24
WAN - ether3 - Static IP.
ISP is about 3up 3down.
I tried the basic VOiP setup in wiki but its not working. Not Sure why. We want to Prioritize voice over browsing so we don’t get a robotic noise.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
You can hit a limit on the layer 2 level (on the switches) or on the layer 3 level (the Mikrotik). Both need to be configured for QoS, because otherwise other traffic could easily interfere with voice calls. Configuring the MikroTik alone is ineffective if the biggest bottleneck is on your switches and their interconnects. What kind of switches are you using, what speeds are they capable of, how are your phones connected, etc?
Generally, it is better to place your IP phones and phone server on a different VLAN from your desktop computers. The VoIP setup at the top of the wiki page, matching the /24 network IPs, assumes that your phones and phone server are on a different subnet and VLAN from your desktop computers. If they are on the same subnet, they will both end up getting prioritized by the rules instead of just the VoIP call traffic.
Also, if you are using FastTrack on the router, you might want to disable it if you are running VoIP and are troubleshooting the QoS config. FastTrack results in improved performance but bypasses most of the standard QoS methods as a result. It is possible to get both to work together, but is probably easier, since you are currently trying to solve an issue, to simply disable fasttrack. (you can see if fasttrack is on by going into IP->Firewall->Filter Rules, if you have a rule with the action “fasttrack connection”, you can disable that rule to turn off fastrack)
