Protected bootloader installation failure on RB951G-2HnD

When trying to install protected bootloader as described in MikroTik wiki after rebooting router the following was logged:

01:13:44 system,info verified protected_routerboot_v3_24_enable_6_29_1_mipsbe.dpk
01:13:47 system,info installed protected-router-6.29
01:13:47 system, info FAILED to enable protected RouterBOOT: code 139

Hardware: RB951G-2HnD
ROS version: 6.33.1
Firmware version: 3.24

Has anybody encountered the same problem?
Is it OK to install package from wiki on newer ROS versions?

I encountered the same issue on exactly the same hardware on latest current routeros (6.34.2).

Hardware: RB951G-2HnD
ROS version: 6.34.2
Firmware version: 3.24

I copied the mipsbe dpk from the wiki (http://www.mikrotik.com/download/share/protected_routerboot_v3_24_enable_6_29_1_mipsbe.dpk) and rebooted. The router didn’t boot and only after a hard power reset (power off->on) the router booted again. The log displayed exactly the same messages as Davis posted above.

Davis, can you recall the same power reset or it didnt happen there?

Exact the same procedure (same firmware, routeros) on a CCR1009 (and of course tile dpk) worked as expected with no issues at all.

Mikrotik, any insight?

Well, this is solved by downgrading to 6.29.1 on firmware 3.24, enabling and upgrading back.

6.29.1 on 3.24 were used because of the full dpk name (protected_routerboot_v3_24_enable_6_29_1_mipsbe.dpk)

Steps:

  1. While on 6.34.2
/system routerboard settings set protected-routerboot=disabled
  1. reboot
  2. downgrade to 6.29.1
  3. copy dpk file and reboot
  4. verify that protected-routerboot is enabled otherwise enable it
/system routerboard settings print

/system routerboard settings set protected-routerboot=enabled
  1. upgrade to 6.34.2 (or the version prior downgrading)
  2. enjoy

Hope this helps someone
