Question about 2.4ghz n 5ghz

Im about to setup a small private wlan for a group of about 50 people for the purpose of gaming, internet and some filesharing. Area where this is going to be deployed is flooded with 2.4ghz access points of residencial users and business. Did a survey and found over 50 AP running on all channels from 1 to 14. Should I use 5ghz for this setup ? most of the users would be real close and as far as maybe 1km away from where the base station will be. LOS is possible from all angles. Im thinking of building a x86 system running mikrotik for the base station since I`m gonna need a lot of horse power to handle the gaming and filesharing and for the CPE i was thinking of using ubiquiti loco5 and shape every user at CPE and not the base station to something like 2 or 3mbits. So is 5ghz the way to go here ? any ideas or suggestions are very welcome.

Yes use 5GHz… i got big problems with flooded 2,4GHz networks…

Why not use RB411 http://routerboard.com/comparison.html#100Series for CPEs and a suitable 802.11a Wi-Fi card with Atheros chipset? And enable nstreme :sunglasses:

because loco is cheaper and simpler to use/mount etc.

Well, 2-3Mb/s isn’t much. But yeah, i would aggree that 5ghz is the way to go, If you have that much 2.4 in the area i would also look into how much 5 is in the air. Many of the newer consumer ap’s are dual band and transmit on both 2.4 and 5
