Question about diferent data rates simultaneously

Hi there, Im wondering if when I have several clients on a interface wireless and some clients are at 54MB and others at 11MB, this mean all clients would be at 11MB or the hardware can simultaneously send data at 54MB to one client and at 11MB to another? Im asking because Im trying to stabilize all clients at one data-rate but some clients dont have enough signal strenght to stay at 54MB and Im worried at the overwall performance of that wireless interface! Its a XR5 ubiquiti card at a RB433 with an Hyperlink Panel 120º 14DBi 2.4GHz!

My understanding is that when an 802.11b client connects to a 802.11g AP all accociated clients will only get the max b rate of 11mbit.

now, does that mean a 802.11g client connecting at 11mbits is slowing the whole thing down to 11mbits? im not sure. Id like the answer to that one my own self, i have that same question about my wireless b network.

I think this topic shall continue because im pretty sure there is a lot more ppl with the same question unanswered!

On a B/G AP, the moment you get one or more B connections, the AP drops into a “B-Protect-Mode”. In this mode, your best clients even at 54 Meg connections will only get about 12 meg throughput. The “B-Protect-Mode” is an automatic mode which slows down the wireless network for B clients. There is really no work around for a B/G AP.

However, If you set your AP for G-only mode then you will no longer experience the slow down due to the AP going into “B-Protect-Mode”. Note - you also may not have all of your weaker clients still connecting.

I know that if I have clients connecting at 270/270 or similiar, and one that connects at 6/6, that the first client still gets more than 6.

As a test - try this on your AP.

  • Set your AP for G-Only mode - turn off all 802.11B rates - turn on all G rates.
Perform a bandwidth speed test to your best client - you may get 20mb or greater

  • Set your AP for B/G mixed mode - turn on all B & G rates
Let a B client connect to your AP
Perform a bandwidth speed test to your best client - you may get up to 12 meg max (while you have connected B clients).

The difference is because you are in B-Protect-Mode when you have a B/G AP with 1 or more B clients associated.

Heads up - an G-only-AP can out-perform a A-AP… Providing you keep the AP out of protect mode.

Thats your first problem, an XR5 isnt supposed to use a 2.4ghz panel : ) Are you asking about wireless (B/G) modes, or data rates on the same mode?
