At the moment we run a FTTH P2P infrastructure UPC connector’s based.
We use WDM UPC SFP and a mikrotik media converter on the other side.
All our distribution shelfs are 48x UPC (blue).
Question:
We are going to implement GPON and our consultants suggested to use APC (green) because of the better performances of the angled connectors.
I have a question now:
If I would like to run a part of the network in APC, I need to use everything APC, green,OK.
What about SFP? The SFP are UPC or APC? Do I need to use pigtails?
For example the MT SFP GPON, is PC, so I assume UPC. What if the whole infrastructure has APC connectors? Just use pigtails I assume
Either a APC to UPC patch lead, or as you say, most commonly they just splice the required pigtail on to the fiber yes with the appropriate mid-coupler.
Personally, I don’t buy into the whole APC thing being better…
On the SFP it doesn’t matter - as long as it is the correct connector. You don’t get a APC and/or UPC SFP module.
It’s difficult to explain, but on a mid coupler, the plastic extending from the fiber connectors needs to be aligned correctly (either square (UPC) or angled (APC)). In a SPF module, the plastic extending from the fiber connector goes inside the receiver of the SFP (there’s a little slot that it slides into). So angled or not, it’s always a proper and correct fit.
