when and why to use station mode, station wds and bridge modes in a mikrotik configuration???help
station modes:
station - typical client mode, that every computer/any other device uses to connect to wireless network (to access point) - needs SSID and finds frequency automatically.
As simple station mode can have only 1 MAC address, you can’t bridge it - so that’s why people use WDS…
station-wds - station in WDS mode, allows to bridge the wireless interface to other interfaces (so that the interface is visible with many MAC addresses)
But the AP needs to have “WDS” enabled to use that mode
station-pseudobridge - if you need to bridge the wireless interface in station mode, but there is no WDS on AP; the stations does something like MAC masquerading (replaces other MACs from bridge with its own)
station-pseudobridge-clone is the same, but you can specify the MAC
But I think http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Wireless_Station_Modes will tell you more ![]()
So, when to use:
station - if you don’t want to bridge the interface, or if you want to create bridge on some upper layer - VPLS (recommended) or EoIP
station-wds - if you want to bridge the wireless interface directly (but you need to reconfigure AP - and it’s not 802.11 compatible)
station-pseudobridge - it’s better not to use at all; though it could be used if you don’t own the AP and you want to bridge your LAN via wireless with an Access Point that is administered by someone else (or cannot do WDS/VPLS/EoIP)
hey buddy I will be asking you a lot of questions coz am a beginner. Why bridging especially in mikrotik configuration is used?help
