Queue Types What is the difference? and Which is better

Dear friends:

We are a ISP. We have about 30 users throught PPPoE on a MAN. I could see when a PPPoE users connect, it “born” with a associated queue because it have a profile, that’s ok.

My question is: why this queue is a default-small queue? Is that the better for them (PPPoE clients)?

It is any way to change it? or Why should i belive that default-small is better queue than other?

I am asking because we have a PPPoE service in one PC and a Firewall for a LAN in other PC and we have some problems in net performance, so i am learning to make good choices.

Thank you very much.

Carlos.

I recommend you to study information from the link,
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Queue_Size

Thanks, i will do. Actually, I am doing :open_mouth:

But i still asking, why Mikrotik belives a RED queue type is the best for PPPoE profiles? I mean, any reason should exist.

I mean, maybe RED queue type was intended works ok on a 100Mbps LAN but here we are working over so closed links, 1-3Mbps in hardware and even 128Kbps created by pppoe profiles.

i hope mi question is clear.

THanks again.

I take that back.

The reason Mikrotik uses “Default-small” queue type is because it deliver most packets on-time and a few with 1 step delay. and there are no 2 step delay.

Any other comment welcome.

Thanks again.

i recommend full bandwith for your clients, limit your ethernet lan your clients are on eg:( 128k/128k) and create a basic queue for downloads of file types :

eg:

*.mp3
*.zip
*.rar
*.iso

what it is, is your clients will get full bandwith you set for them but drops when downloading
