I purchased a 751G-2HnD. I set it up using webfig quickset after I upgraded it to 5.23. There were some issues (mainly regarding DNS (why does the device keep the original x.x.88.1 address as the static DNS Server in its DHCP reply after the actual router address has been changed?)) but I made it through. Internal traffic works just fine but as soon as I use the external connection things are getting awful. Web browsers are taking ages to load web pages. Upgrading my Linux boxes using aptitude results in rates of <1k/s(!). Usually I have >700k/s with my current Internet connection. I already tweaked the MTU rates and several other stuff but without success. I suspect this to be due to the default IPTABLES/NAT setting of the device, which I didn’t touch yet (except of disabling all firewall rules in the “filter rules” tab). I’m not very much in this IPTables stuff so I would highly appreciate to get some tweaks that would help me to get the internet connection fast and safe. As I am a heavy Linux user and I currently don’t have any windows box running so please expect me to use either the ssh or webfig interface.
Okay, there is some new stuff I figured out while waiting for help:
The main issue seams to be the “Quick Set” Page of Webfig. This page seems not to be working in a way one (especially an absolute beginner) would have expected it. One example is the DNS issue I mentioned before. Two other points:
1st: I am currently using the device in “Router” mode according to the “mode” radiobutton at the top. Selecting “Bridge”, which was recommended by some folks in the forum, has resulted in not being able to select the PPPoE connection.
2nd: What’s the matter with that dropdown box at the very top? There is not a single word about that AP “Home AP” CPE “PTP Bridge” in the documentation. The documentation I found is obviously outdated: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Quickset
In a forum, in which some other guy asked the same thing, (http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/v6-rc6-released/62201/166) the answer was barley helpful. When I want to play around with this dropdown box I’m getting a warning and after confirming that, nothing happens.
After the device had another two months of vacation as a dust settlement area, I changed my provider. As the new provider uses standard DHCP instead of crappy PPPoE, I gave it another try. I found a new software version to be available and updated to 5.24. Now everything works like a charm. Thanks MikroTik.
But one thing remains: After not getting any support for months, I did not recommending my boss and colleagues to go for MikroTik. I fear this battle is lost for you A little feedback like “known issue see bug #xyz” or “There will be a software upgrade later this month” would have been very supportive. Not getting a response at all felt quite dismissive.
