Absolute newbie to RouterOS here. I’m trying an initial configuration of an SXT Lite5, using the Quickset menu in WebFig. There is a menu at the top right with entries for CPE, PTP Bridge, and CAP (what does CAP stand for?). If I select anything besides CPE, I get a popup that says that I will lose the connection with the router (which I do). It apparently reboots, and afterward, no longer responds to a ping at 192.168.88.1. I haven’t been able to figure out how to connect to it after doing this, other than resetting it to factory defaults. Does selecting one of these modes (CPE, PTP Bridge or CAP) change the IP address?
Quickset is a dangerous beast. You can use WinBox and connect to MAC address intead of IP.
Thanks for the advice. It looks like learning my way around RouterOS is a must before mucking around to much. I’m trying to decide whether to do much with MikroTik, or stay with Ubiquiti. It would appear that RouterOS is quite a complicated beast (but more capable) in comparison.
It’s not complicated, just complex. It gives you a lot of freedom, including many ways to shoot yourself in the foot.
If you know something about networks (Linux and iptables experience helps a lot), you’ll soon feel at home. If not, it might be a little tricky at first, but if you are willing to learn, it should be fine. Start with Quickset to get some basic working config, then examine what exactly was set and continue from there.
Quickset is like the “wizard” that you often find in other routers.
It collects some information from you, then you click Apply, and then it is completely unclear what will happen
and what are the results.
I don’t like that, so I just start from the default and set what I like. I wished that there was an easy way of removing
Quickset without losing the “overview” page that unfortunately sits on the same webfig page…
(it is easy to remove entire pages from the webfig, but editing the startup page to omit only certain elements proves
to be tricky, I have not succeeded in that yet)
Unfortunately the quickset makes changes even before you click apply.
