R11-LTE6 speed

Hi guys,

I would like to ask for your opinion re: LTE internet speed when used in netmetal ac2 with R11e-LTE6 (EU). The sim card and the subscription should allow up to 300/50 (and is also advertised on their website), but its download and upload speeds average around 20/5. If I test the same SIM in an iPhone, I get around 120+Mbps. We’re located in a big city with perfect 4G coverage.

Is there some setting in winbox I could check or fix ?

Thank you very much
Michael

First documentation: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Interface/LTE

r11e-LTE6 can do agregation with Band 3+7, two bands.
Phones can connect many bands, this is like compare $100 with $1000 lte modules - check bands 3 and 7 separate and next enable them two.
Remembet to upgrade lte module firmware to v025

Hello,
Thank you for your response. I have upgraded modem firmware to 25.
If I select bands 3 and 7, the connection registers with the operator, but I get no internet. If I leave all bands blank, then it connects and internet works.
In this case, it shows:
[admin@MikroTik] > interface lte info lte1 once

Does this mean I am using channel aggregation? Why it is not working when bands 3 and 7 are selected in General tab ?

Thanks.

What is the size of the MTU of your LTE interface?

Regards.

Yes

Why it is not working when bands 3 and 7 are selected in General tab ?

First, set only b3 and check signals, eNB and go to only b7 and check if you can connect and this is the same eNB (Tower).

Now you have no select bands, means all bands or band=20,1,3,7 and automatic connection works for you with b20+7.

You can check if current tower send you some other bands by interface lte at-chat 0 input=“at+eemginfo?” , check inter, not intra.

Hello,
MTU is 1500

If I select only B3 or only B7, the modem does not register to the network. It shows “functionality: full”, but nothing else. The only way it registers to the network is to uncheck all bands and then it connects as I posted above.

To be honest, and while I really appreciate your responses and help, I have a hard time understanding the actual meaning or guidance on what should I do.

I am basically looking into the issue why my LTE is so slow when compared to marketed speed of the R11-LTE6 module and I am struggling with finding the correct settings. Currently I am getting around 10-15Mbps max (based on speedtest).

Try with 1480 bytes of MTU.

Regards.

check if
/interface lte at-chat lte1 input=“at*cell=0”
not get you a 2CA

You study
/interface lte at-chat 0 input=“at+eemginfo?”

You check what bands, ca your phone do ?

Hi guys,
I’ve did some reading and it seems that my operator (Orange Slovakia) is using bands 7 and 20 only (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks_in_Europe)

So I’ve set the MTU to 1428 (tried with 1480 with the same result), and selected bands 7 and 20 only. Now I’m getting around 25MBps download and 1-2MBps upload.

Can this be cause by my RSRP of -101 dB which would suggest I am at the edge of the tower?

Thank you

Strictly speaking RSRP only explains low downlink speeds … and RSRP value of -101dBm is not really edge of cell (standards assume working down to -115 dBm). The problem is that operator may decide to boost downlink power, but user can not boost uplink power and hence DL and UL become mis-aligned in coverage (UL coverage is less than DL). This doesn’t only affect UL, it affects DL as well (usual TCP streams involve large number of small TCP packets in other direction - the ACKs and if UL is really bad, those ACKs get delayed hurint DL speed). Another factor is cell-load: in lower-category CA, uplink is still single-carrier and if serving cell (in CA set) is the busiest cell (probability is quite high), then user’s UL is not great.
But then, if LTE modem can not register to network when forced to B7, the B7 cells are most probably too weak and modem is not in CA at all.

The only cure is to use antenna with high gain (which helps in both directions), but unfortunately MT doesn’t have any antenna with at least half-decent gain at low frequencies (band 20 is 800 MHz which is low frequency). It could be that RSRP of B7 cell is way lower than what you see … devices usually display RSRP of serving cell while in CA and if operator didn’t tweak network settings too much, serving cell will usually be the low-frequency cell because of lower pathloss. But at the end of the day, user gets its portion of air-resources (time and OFDM codes) and if wireless link is good (high-gain antenna, …), then more bits can be transmitted using same air-resources.

Thank you very much for your interesting and informative reply.

In my case , with better RSRP I can get a lot better upload speed instead download speed but is true that also is improved (for example with -115 dBm I can get 15/1 Mbps and with -95 dBm I can get 25/25 Mbps).

Regards.
