Random PPPoe disconnections

Hey guys

Got a really strange thing happening in our network at the moment… we run a number of Mikrotik routers in our network which are networked with OSPF and VPLS for the PPPoe server from the main router.

We are finding that PPPoe clients are randomly disconnecting and reconnecting within the network… has anyone else had this issue before?! Some of our clients have long uptimes and no issues, others seem to restart more often. The PPPoe seems to just drop and then reconnect some seconds after…

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Is this related to specific network branches? RouterOS version being used?

Hey

Weirdly enough it only happens on certain parts of our network, weirdly enough one of the worst is the clients who come through the AP on the shop which goes directly into the main router!

Do you know regarding MTU settings if when some changes the AP does the mikrotik ports MTU need to be changed as well? I ask as i just brought all our MTU levels down from 1520 which was set by the last guy who used to manage the network. He had AP’s and stations on 1520 but the mikrotik ports are only 1500… that doesn’t make sense to me? Also the PPPoe server runs at 1480 MTU and there was no VLANS on these connections. We have found that sometimes using a small mikrotik RB as a home router instead of the standard Netis routers sometimes helps but thats getting expensive… but i now have a client who even with the mini RB still gets some disconnections. Any idea?

Version is: V6.37.1

Be careful changing MTU values if using MPLS/VPLS as they may have been tuned for your specific deployment and global settings.

PPPoE disconnections happen when there are L2 problems, so first thing to review are those network branches (PTPs, wires, ports…) where disconnections happen more often.

The hAP lite, which is great for flats, is $21. It was Mikrotik response to providers asking for an affordable home router so that they could ditch netis/tp-link and similar rubbish.

But that way you’ll be solving problems from the customer CPE towards its home network.

PPPoE problem could be located between CPE and your AP (or further up your uplinks); start by checking that client that comes through the AP directly connected to your shop. (feel free to post AP > Registration table > client signal tab)

Upgrading to latest bugfix (6.37.4) cannot hurt either.
