RB for 20 000 users

Hi everyone

So I am used to running smaller RouterBoards for a few hundred hotspot users. I now need to run a network for up to 20 000 users, and am way way out of my depth.

I have been doing a lot of reading on the topic but can’t seem to find much. I have two main questions and would really appreciate some advise:

  • First off is this possible?
  • How do you issue enough IP’s on one Hotspot Server(is it as simple as using the correct subnet?)
  • What RouterBoard do I require for this, hardware wise( a RB-CCR1036 powerful enough?)

Your patience with such a noob is much appreciated!

Regards

With a large user base you may want to avoid single points of failure so you may spread the load across multiple servers. Other factors such as the maximum upstream bandwidth available and the source of the clients (wired? wireless?) can help to clarify the design requirements.

totally agree, better spread the load over several hotspot servers. if you have a single uplink for that network you maybe still have a single point of failure. i would put there a CCR and let it just do routing! no hotspot, no firewall, no connection tracking. just forwarding packets and talkting routing protocols not more.
