RB-SXT Lite [CL] to TP-Link [AP]

Hi all,

first time poster here, please be kind with my MT beginner questions…

..in an attempt to troubleshoot a long-time established TP-Link link over a distance of about 2km I purchased a second-hand RB-SXT lite, which I plan to use as a client to the TP-Link AP. The mikrotik unit came with RouterOS v. 6.34.4 (!!) installed which dates back to 160303 if my research is right so far. TP-Link gear runs on latest versions (with the WPA2 krack exploit fixed apparently).

So my question is: should I absolutely update this RB-SXT Lite to the latest version of RouterOS just for testing out the viability of the link before I draw any conclusions and/or rollout a change to MT gear or could I just temporarily test with this old OS and see how things go? I’d be reluctant to update on the merit that there’s supposedly also the f/w that needs updating and from what I read that may lead to other implications of devices with older f/w? In any case for starters this will be a headless connection (i.e. no other clients will be connected after the MT unit) just to test things out. I -could- update the OS wirelessly down the line (although not recommended this is how I’ve been managing my TP-Link gear so far)…

Your comments are more than welcome

Hi,
It would be highly recommended to upgrade your RouterOS version, if anything it should only improve the quality and security of the link compared to version 6.34.4. Afterwards you can upgrade the firmware as well, by running (System → RouterBoard → Upgrade → Reboot)

Thanks for the swift reply,

upon updating to the latest is it possible to roll-back both the OS and the firmware to the currently installed version?

Yes, downgrade is possible.
