RB1000 Problem

I just received my first 2 RB1000’s, so i plugged them up. I plugged my patch cable into port1 and my laptop. I fired up Winbox, and nothing happens no Mac shows up. I have tried logging in by the MAC on the Case, and 10.10.10.10. Is it possible i have to bad RB1000’s?

I have setup a few Mikrotik boards before, and i have not had any problems. Any help would be appreciated.

Ideas:

  1. incomatible NICs/ports or wrong cable: Put an ethernet switch between your laptop and the RBs.
  2. disable firewall on laptop
  3. laptop could have bad Windows XP TCP/IP, winsock etc problems so try another PC
  4. connect through serial cable and investigate
  5. maybe MikroTik forgot to deploy RouterOS? or maybe not. Run Netinstall and see if you can deploy RouterOS via NetInstall.
  6. Check power of RouterBoard, if it is sufficient to power it up ?A ?V

then tell us what happened.

  1. I tried a different cable, and put a switch between my laptop and the RB1000.
2.The firewall was disabled on my laptop.
3.I tried another laptop, and had the same results
4.I get no connection to my laptop when i plug a serial cable into the RB1000.
5.I am not that familiar with netinstall, but i downloaded the software. When i fired it up i could not see the RB1000. I am assuming the RB1000 should have shown up under routers.
    6.The power is fine.

I appreciate your help. Is there anything else left to try???

Gaining access to the RB through the serial interface is the best way to diagnose the issue.
Check your settings and try again.
Use with a serial terminal program like Hyperterm. Serial port settings should be 115200,8,n,1.

I know this sounds crazy, but i have tried hyper terminal with all available bit rates. I have even tried all rates with hardware, and all i get is weird characters. It connects but no login prompt.

Only i could have bad enough luck to get 2 bad boards. I just need to make sure i am not missing something.

Ask resellers for help, call the company you bought them from and tell them whatsup. They should replace them actually. Or try and help and then when they see there’s no options - they should replace. Good luck.

I did call them, and he told me they did not know much about Mikrotik. He also told me they did not warranty Mikrotik. I do not normally order from them, but the place i usually use was out of stock. He told me he was going to talk with management about it. I probably should not give any names, so i wont. I will not be placing anymore orders there. This is just bad business, and if they do not ship me some working routers they will wish they had.

Normal practice in this case and good business for all is like this: even if they do not know how to deal with a MT/RB problem, they must respect the warranty and replace your routers. The old ones they must send up the line eventually to someone who does repairs, like MikroTik Latvia themselves. And you can tell them this as it seems the person you spoke with is fresh with this situation.

I will be talking with them again today. Thanks for all your help though. It is nice to have a place to turn to when you are at you’re wits end.

Do you have any other RouterBOARD to try ?
Try to connect to another working RouterBOARD with the Null Modem cable and check how it will work.
Perhaps, there is wrong Null Modem cable.
