Hi all,
My ISP switched my line to FTTH.
I have been using ISP modem router in Bridge mode, leaving all the tough things to a RB1100AHx4 (firewall, openvpn, dhcp). I was thinking about replacing both RB1100 and Modem with a L009, which has an SFP port.
I have already compared the two MT devices, and obviusly RB1100 is more packed, has more RAM, but probably I am mostly under-using it. Moving to a L009 will I miss something, in terms of the three things I am using (firewall, openvpn, dhcp)?
I can add that RB1100 is powered through POE in, by a CRS112-8P, so problem here. SFP module is a DLINK dpn-100.
You do have to be careful with replace your ISP modem with an SFP… Depending on exactly what ISP is doing with the fiber (e.g. like GPON), there may not be a SFP. And SFPs get hot, so added concern on the L009.
Is the internet speed actually faster than 1Gbps? If not, and ISP modem is bridged, ethernet may not be too bad.
Also, with newer ROSE storage package… the RB1100AHx4 have gotten more interesting since they can function as a poor-man’s NAS with some added disks.
Thank you for your answer, max speed is about 970MB/1GB (got it only once). I tried both before bridging the mode, more or less the same speed with or without MT router.
I knew RB1100 has also NAS capabilities, I have a 512GB SD plugged in, but I already have a Synology drive as a NAS.
I just like the RB1100 design. Having options is good, even if unused .
There just been reports of SFP issues in recent builds and GPON compatibility is complex… so if you’re not going to get a speed bump from using SFP… I just don’t think going to L009 is going to buy you much. If your internet speed changes, personally that’s when I’d upgrade.
Thank you very much.
Probably I wasn’t so good in my description. My ISP brought me an SFP that now is plugged into the modem/router, the same modem previusly was doing VDSL2+.
I’d like to get rid of it, I don’t think I’ll get more than 1GB anytime soon.
