RB112 with SR2 - disconnects, then no wireless functionality

Hello,
I am building a CPE with an RB112 and SR2 (Atheros AR5212) card. This is my first time using MikroTik hardware so please point out anything obvious I may be missing…

I set up the wireless interface SSID, the status showed it was connected, the AP registered the client with good signal (-66dBm) and everything seemed to be working fine. After maybe 2 or 3 minutes, I noticed I could no longer access the wireless lan. The wireless status showed “searching for network” and the Scan/Sniff/Snoop/Freq usage tools all showed zero wireless activity. I tried rebooting the system (both from software and shutdown / power disconnection), it still did not connect to the AP or see any other wireless activity.

I left the system for 30 minutes or so powered down and when I next turned it on, it again connected to the AP, but after passing data for a few seconds, it was again disconnected. The access point shows “Packet to client 0015.6d53.3a7d reached max retries, removing the client”, the Scan/Sniff/Snoop/etc all showing zero wireless activity again. It’s as if the radio just completely shuts down for some reason.

From reading posts here, I understand the SR2 has a high power requirement. I am using an 18v, 0.7a power supply with POE. I have also tried reducing the TX Power to 17dBm for the radio, with no luck.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Do I have a bad radio card? The fact it works briefly after being left powered down seems to indicate a possible heat problem? Is the SR2 shutting down due to faulty temperature indicator perhaps? Any suggestions would help a lot… thanks.

I think you are overdriving the power on the MikroTik at 18v. Try a 48v power supply.

Edit: Are you R1CH from SA?

Good catch, I would have hoped the reseller we got these from would have been smart enough to include the correct power supply. Unfortunately switching to a 12v supply didn’t help - I got through to Google and then it dropped out again with no wireless activity. I don’t have any 48v supplies to hand right now so I can’t try that unfortunately.

And yes, this is R1CH from SA… CuddleChunks seemed to rave on about MikroTik stuff so I figured I’d put some to the test .

I’m “permabanned by Ozma” Dryanta. These are awesome little boards, I run a distributorship http://www.no-wire.net. We aren’t taking any orders until next week re-doing our shopping cart and inventory control system.

Edit: I’ll ship you power supplies to get un-permabanned…

1 SR2 card should work fine with the low power supply at RB112 (12 or 18V).

  • close JP2 jumper (for low power PoE JP2 should be closed).
  • make sure you have ‘tx-power-mode=default’ configuration.
  • check that jumper is connected correctly (and no problems with antena).
  • try to plug card to another slot.
    Report back with the results.

I’m sorry to report that none of those suggestions helped. The JP2 jumper was closed already, I also tried swapping antennas “just in case”. I also tried powering the board directly (non-POE) and I still have the very same problem, initially it works for a very short period, then the wireless connection will drop due to some error like “excessive data loss” and I can no longer see anything on the wireless interface.

Is it possible the SR2 card has been damaged from running with the incorrectly supplied 18v power adapter when I first tried to get it working? I actually have 2 RB111 boards, both with SR2 cards. Neither of them work. The first one does not even see the SR2 card at all which I am almost sure points to a bad card, and the second one is the one I am trying to get working now. I have also tried swapping the cards between boards with the same result on each board. Looks like I got a bad batch of SR2 cards…

do you have ano other (non SR) card?

thry that. if no results, then try t contact your reseller.
i have RMA in my mind

I have a CM9 that worked fine out of the box in another board. I will try swapping into one of the boards giving me problems just to be sure it’s the SR2s and not the boards. I find it hard to believe that both SR2 cards would be bad though - I guess I should find a reseller that actually does some QA on stuff before selling it .

Whats wrong with using cm9 to shoot the link. Is it really far or nlos?

R1CH, from r1ch.net? Hey man.. it’s majik.

It’s a NLOS shot, quite a bit of tree density in the way. We were hoping the SR2 would blast through it, but it’s not doing much of anything right now. I’ve contacted our reseller (Titan Wireless) for an RMA, unfortunately they sold the antenna/routerboard/radio as a prebuilt unit and want the whole thing shipped back just for a broken radio! Argh.

And yes, R1CH from r1ch.net. Hi .

If you are shooting through trees you DEFINITELY need sr9. Streakwave has them and the appropriate pacwireless antennas.
