RB1200 keeps rebooting after firmware 6.31 update

Hello,

I have updated from 6.30.1 to 6.31 and it started to get strange problems until now that it just keeps rebooting.

First, from time to time when I upgrade the firmware and reboot, it wont reboot… you have to power off/power on it to start working (I have two RB1200, both same strange issue)

But it this wont bother me because someone onsite could power cycle it.

OK, I tried to upgrade to 6.31… it upgraded (seems to), I have to ask to power cycle it and it started! then I went to Packages to see if the upgrade was “ok” and there I saw that when you open that window there was no version installed something like “version 0.0” (on 6.31 you have a new screen showing release candidates, beta, stable releases…, seems strange to me that it was not working as it shoud this screen)

So I reboot again! and it never start up, it keeps rebooting this way:

  1. plug the power, the blue light on the front of the router is ON
  2. I heard a beep and the green light goes ON
  3. it reboots

I open the case, and did the reset contact onboard (with a screw driver)

No the router keeps rebooting in a diferent way:

  1. plug the power, the blue light goes ON
  2. green light goes ON and you hear several beeps, now its dificult to explain the sound… but its like several short beeps, first fast beeping decreasing speed until one last beep…
  3. green light goes OFF and then goes point 1 again.

I tired:

a) winbox using MAC address autodetect… nothing shows up.

b) netinstall on port eth 10 (the boot one)… nothing shows up.
(I have done netinstall before so I almost sure its done correctly)

c) every port for netbooting… nothing.

d) power on with reset button pressed… nothing happens, the 1) 2) 3) steps continues to repeat itself like no reset button being touched.

I think I have to try console rs232, will have to search about it and get a cable.

Any idea the strange beeping? is it “normal” what it means? is there any beeping diagnose explanation?

Thanks!

S.

You should read the thread about 6.31 before. Need to connect serial console, set to boot from ethernet and make netinstall. Use 6.30.4.

Thanks Jarda!!! I will try that!

Here the post you point me:
http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/6-31-released/90490/1

Is your problem solved?

OK… I finally got a serial port notebook to test the serial console of my RB1200.

Reading the wiki and mikrotik docs, I cant find info about how to recover the router from console. It is more about controlling another device using the console port, please correct me if I am wrong.

So, I try using minicom (on linux) or putty on windows, with serial comm configured to 9600bps, databits 8, stopbits 1, parity none, flowcontrol none. Would it be ok?

If it is OK, I should connect the serial to the computer and to the mikrotik serial console, power on the RB1200 and I should start reading the output? right?

But I have no output on the serial console.

What can I try?

Any idea where to find the beep and lights meaning of the RB1200? this would help me…

Thanks

Speed is 115200.

See here for settings (this is a netinstall procedure but folow just the serial settings

http://www.wirelessinfo.be/index.php/mikrotik/pages/seriale

I tried 115200 and XON XOFF, almost every option… but no luck, no output from the serial console.

I am right now going to test that! thanks very much for “the light at the end of the tunnel” (hope it works)

OK, the hyperterminal stays like this:
(no output)

And here the video capture, the beeping sound is really strange for me :-/
(sorry the tv sound in the background)

Any clue?

Thanks,

I had problems with other programs but realterm. Try it.

Thanks Jarda, I have tried it but no luck, really good serial term program (added to my collection :sunglasses: .

Please if you can, can you watch the video I uploaded? the beeping sound of my RB1200 is “normal”? where can I find a beeping error sound explanation for my RB1200?

Thanks,

If you can, please check the video… the router might be completely lost and if it is so, I would know it is lost.

Anyway, is there any beep diagnose table, so I can understand the strange beeping at boot time?

Thanks,

Sounds like it’s still alive.
Is your cable a null modem cable? DB9 connections you need for this are pin 5 straight through, pins 2 and 3 crossed over.
Make yourself a loopback DB9 connector with pins 2 and 3 connected together. Makes confirmation of the terminal and cabling a quick process.
I’ve had more trouble with USB to serial adaptors than Mikrotik routers.

Do you have any other router with RS232 ?
Check your cable connecting it to this “good” router and try to get any data on RS232 terminal.
