RB2011 RM Wifi module and USB question

Hello everybody.

I came here cause i need some information to make my home network some securer. Now i use a FritzBox to connect to internet and I’m bound to that one cause of Provider. I connected an USB Harddisk as NAS on the FritzBox. But there are more and more devices coming on the network, like Security Cam, Central heating and some SmartPhones. Now thought about some more security by adding a Router/Firewall between the Fritzbox and my internal network. So i put all the IOST Devices also between those two. Someone mentioned to use Mikrotik, so i ended up here whit some questions.

I own a 19" rack, so i planned to buy a 19" device. Found the RB2011 whit some different versions. The red Desktop sometimes have Wifi-modules, but the 19" versions don’t. Is it possible to add a wifi module to a 19" version? I would use a longer Antenna Cable to get a Omni-Antenna into the corridor.

Also i need a replacement for the “NAS” into the internal network. Some RB2011 and the RB3011 have a USB connector. Is it possible to connect a USB 2,5" harddisk onto it and use it as a NAS?

Thanks

No, it is not possible. A better idea will be to use a separate device as an access point. Have a look, for example, at wAP or wAP ac.

It is technically possible, but works very slowly, and is unlikely to be improved.

My idea was to use as less power possible. That is the reason to use less possible devices.

RB1100AHx4 does have high-speed storage, but have to say is a recently released device and I haven’t tested SMB performance personally, I’d ask in the forum for other users experience regarding SMB performance. Max Power draw is 25W.

Coupling this with a some wAP ac’s (Max Power draw 12W) will enable you to better place them for wireless coverage.

So even using multiple devices, say a RB1100AHx4 + 2 x wAP ac’s would be less than 50Watts maximum total; I doubt the sum of average consumption exceeds 20Watts.

Thanks, but that one i above my budget. It’s only for home use… eehhh well… nerd home use

Already own some APs from other brands that i could use. Or i could tunnel the one or two devices from the wifi from the FritzBox trough the Firewall.

That’s kinda max. I don’t know what should you do to make it consume all 12W of power. I have 4 of these, and none consumes more then roughly 5W no matter what I do.

I have seen people take two RB2011’s, one with WiFi, and one Rack mount and put them WiFi one into the rack mount case.

There are also 3rd-party rackmount cases for the RB2011 routers.

Pro tip:: Do not put your Access Point inside a rack.. Run a cable and put the AP where it needs to be - PoE works well for this
