I tried to use fiber module supplied by my local ISP but it doesn’t seem work. ISP Help desk explained that their fiber switches work at 100Mbps maximum. That my current SFP receiver works at 100Mbps and transmitter is at 100Mbps also.
If I understand correctly, based on SFP receiver module, ISP uses transmitter with 1310nm and receiver with 1550nm, it is the same as these SFP BiDi Transceivers 1.25G do, but in my case these new transceivers should support lower speed also - 100Mbps equipment.
I am sure of one thing: My new mikrotik router will support SFP BiDi Transceivers 1.25G modules, but I don’t know if will be applicable under ISPs configuration conditions.
My questions is: If I use SFP BiDi Transceivers 1.25G modules as replacement, would these support lower speed devices, like fiber networkswitches that work at 100Mbps? (Example: To connect the new transmitter to a switch supporting 100Mbps max and on the other end, the receiver to Mikrotik router)
For those that are in the same boat as me, I publish the reply I received from Mikrotik support.
the problem that you ran into is that your ISP switch supports only 100Base 155M
SFP transceivers (as he already explained to you) but our RB2011 can use only
1000Base 1.25G Gigabit ethernet SFP transceivers. Which leads to problem that they
cannot be connected through SFP. Our currently released products that have SFP
ports on them support only 1.25G rate SFP interfaces due to hardware limitations.
only if you find 100M media converter or universal 10/100/1g media converter (which usually are costly). othercase you will still be at the same point.
maybe ask your ISP, they should have a spare converter… after all - they want you to work as much as you want them.
Rower, it is not worth buying a 1000mbps media converter now that I have 100mbps fiber connection. If I’ll have 1000 fiber connection it is wise to plug it in directly in Mikrotik router and not through a media converter.
I have bought a tplink (100Mb/s, single-mode) media converter, it works smoothly.
After successfully configuring both Internet and IPTV VLAN, works good.
It was a bit strange, when configuring, to have at “Quick set” page in “WAN” configuration:
WLAN IP Address 0.0.0.0/0
Even if at “IP” → “DHCP Client”, the ether1-gateway has an IP address aquired.
However I seem to have seldom connection drops. I don’t know at what point ( device )
