Is there an easy way to determine whether the SFP port is functional? Loopback cable with a transceiver installed?
I’m just trying to setup a fiber to media converter box (Gig Fiber<–>GigE) to experiment with the SFP port. Does anyone have a good media-converter box/transceiver/cable combination they could recommend?
On ANY Fiber PORT… (SFP / GBIC)… you can always do a very simple loopback to test if the Port Comes UP.
All you have to do is take a fiber cable (simplex) and plug the two ends into the SFP /GBIC …
And you have a fiber loopback plug.
As for SFP / GBIC… two schools of thoughts… ..
… One says buy name brand quality
other says… hey, it is standard, so you can pretty much use anyone.
**Note, some of the different Mfg. of equipment have enhanced functions built in, which will only work with there brand of SFP/GBIC’s, which allow you to see Light Levels via CLI/Web Management etc.
