I have no idea how much resources would this scenario take so I have dilemma whether to use RB2011UAS or RB450G. RB2011UAS-RM would be a better option because of rack mount.
It would be used as hotspot server for the network, there would be first html page, no user authentication, because it would be free service and it should run DHCP for clients. Client number is some 300 hundred.
How much resources would it take? I guess there would not be much CPU stress, but maybe memory would be more important. RB2011UAS has 128MB and RB450G 256MB.
It is never about the number of users when it comes to resource consumption (cpu/memory) … it is always about the amount of traffic (packets/bandwidth) they will generate and other configuration options you will use (firewall, queue, nat, proxy, …). Keep that in mind when choosing your hardware … all of the above units are great, but can also be quite quickly exhausted of resources in some conditions.
we are using an 2011UAS-RM for two DSL lines 6mbit. Routing 7 local subnets, using vlan (software), running dhcp and hotspot. router acts as dns server and VPN gateway. we have 80 firewall, 22 nat and 14 mangle rules.
traffic is around 10 gigabytes a day.
cpu is not a problem, max 25%
memory usage is around 32mb
