Heloo, I consider to buy new router for my “small office”. I dont need WiFi, just RouterOS. In consideration is RB2011UiAS-RM VS custom x86.
X86 is ex Phion/Barracuda switch with expired licence. Device is EOL/EOS.
I installed RouterOS.
Deviec is 1U rackmount, with Intel E8400 CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and 10 X 10/100/1000 ports. “Server” can run wide ranges of OS but only without GUI. When it cames to GUI every single OS crashes, also have seriall port and anothe PCI expansion card.
RouterOS is installed by plugging HDD in another PC and run installation from CD, then put HDD in server.
I also need about 5-10 VPN L2TP/IPsec/ and EoIP tunnels.
If decide to use x86 variant I will buy L4 licencce.
+1 …the E8400 CPU does not offer hardware acceleration / AES instruction set.
This will consume a lot of energy without a real bang for the buck, when it comes to VPN / IPsec tunnels.
I dont need anything special. 5-10 VPN users, 5-10 forwarding and 9 cabla connected hosts. I was considering hex S but it is too much money for me right now( in my country sellers ask 180$ for it) And I still have in mind my x86.
What do you think guys, is ti faster in thoruhtput than hex S, RB2011UiAS-RM and mentioned RB450 ?
Some x86 thing will cost more than any other premade option, so I would get a hEX S or even a RB4011 because both have good IPsec performance and are all-in-one gadgets.
