RB250GS IP Addresses Question

Yet another RB250GS question.

This time: How do you change the IP address of the unit?

The one I received has a default address of 192.168.88.1

No matter what I try to change it to, the address reverts back to 192.168.88.1

So this is what I did. The LAN in my office that I’m working on has a subnet 192.168.75.0/24
My computer has an IP address 192.168.75.15/24
It also has an IP address 192.168.88.10/24

I can log into http://192.168.88.1 using the web brower no problems.

I then go to system - general and change the IP address to 192.168.75.125
I then click on Apply All.

So now, at least in theory, the unit should have an IP address of 192.168.75.125
Not a chance!

I go to http://192.168.75.125 in my browser and there’s just nothing.

When I go back to http://192.168.88.1 - System and click on Reboot, the unit reboots and once again the IP address has defaulted to 192.168.88.1

How do I change the IP address on a RB250GS? I’m obviously doing it wrong.

I thought it might be my web browser, so I tired IE8 and Chrome - as I was using FireFox 3.6.4

It’s the same on all of them.

I then did some more digging, logged into the RouterBoard that connects my subnet to the rest of the world and clicked on IP - Neighbours.

The RB250GS is there, but its’ IP address never changes from 192.168.88.1 no matter what I enter in the web browser.

FFS!
Can you reset it?

Let me go and do that and report back.

So what’s the trick to getting the switch back to defaults?

Pressing the button for one second doesn’t work.

Pressing the button for five seconds doesn’t work.

Pressing the button while the unit is switched off, switching the unit on and then holding the button in (not that easy) for another five seconds also doesn’t work.

And, to add insult to injury…

There’s a software option on the system tab to reset the configuration.

That’s the same as changing an IP address, ie it doesn’t work.

Try SwOS v1.1 which has just been released on mikrotik.com

How long should the Upgrading…(Please do not interrupt) message remain on screen?

Just reboot it. In v1.1 reboot after upgrade will happen automatically.

Now for my next problem.

Just in case there’s an issue with FireFox, I’ve decided to do the upgrade with Chrome.

I click on “Choose File” under System - Firmware update.
I find the file and select it.
“swos-1.1.lzb” then appears next to “Choose File”.

I click in “Upgrade”.

Upgrading…(Please do not interrupt) appears in red at the top of the screen.

“No File Chosen” suddenly appears next to “Choose File”.

I go to make coffee.

I return.

The red message is still there and the router has not upgraded it’s firmware.

What now?

REBOOT, do you read the answers we post ?

Negative on software reboot. I’ll try unplugging it and restarting it that way.

Hardware reboot has worked. Software reboot did not work.

It’s now running ver 1.1

I’m off to try and change the IP address.

I’ve managed to change the IP address to one on the same subnet as me.

Now for the acid test. Changing the IP to one that’s not on the same subnet as me.

Things are looking much better with ver 1.1 of the firmware.

There still seems to be something strange going on with SNMP though.

I’ve now got the switch so that Dude can see it. I’ve got Port 1 plugged into a 3Com 3300 and port 5 plugged into a RB750.

Dude sees all 5 ports but as soon as Dude starts actually probing the unit some of the ports disappear.

I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that the switch’s IP address is 192.168.65.84 and it’s on a /29 subnet, while the Dude Server’s IP address is 192.168.65.2 or a /30 subnet.

As you can see from the screenshot in Dude, the ports that are connected are just gone.

Just to make things a little more interesting, when I use MRTG and PERL to SNMPwalk the switch, interfaces 1 and 5 are there and can be read without any problems.

This could be an issue with Dude.

Mikrotik,

Are you going to fix this SNMP issue or not?

Do you make regular SNMPwalk from the Dude?
We have added SwOS device to the Dude, it is monitoring and 5 interfaces are shown.

  • Snmpwalk from The Dude;
  • snmpwalk from Unix;
5 interfaces are still displayed and snmpwalk returns 5 interfaces.

Yes, I can SNMPwalk it no problems.

What version of Dude has SWOS? I can’t seem to find it in the 3.6 that I’m running.

SWOS does not have any Dude version.
I’m running 4.0beta2 Dude, interfaces are displayed correctly.
