I have two (old) RB411 routers and I need to set up a point-to-point link within my network (so I don’t need firewall protection) and the DHCP etc will be dealt with elsewhere.
These RB411s have been set up (by someone else) with RouterOS 6.xx but are thrashing - ie CPU usage is very high.
Can anyone recommend the best version to run this as a basic AP and Client on a captive network please? I’m happy to downgrade but I don’t want to have to cable this link.
Best regards,
Ian
PS - anyone like to suggest the same answer for an RB411 with a 3G modem card?
actually the best is to upgrade by using Netinstall. it will make sure the configuration is cleared, any problems are removed and software is the latest.
Just netinstall latest ROS stable version to it. There is no reason why CPU should be too high, RB411 runs perfectly fine with latest ROS version. It may have been hacked, so always better to netinstall hardware you buy used. If you only use RB411 for bridge + wifi, it’s fine for 100Mbit/s link.
For 3G modem, you can use any mikrotik board with USB port. As long as your 3G modem is supported by ROS, it should just appear as new interface.
Cheapest currently selling option is hEX or look for used RB411U/433U series…
