RB433AH - Reboot continuously with three R52Hn

Hi Everyone

I ‘am planning to setup small-scale WiFi services, for that purpose i have acquired following products.

  1. RB433AH x1
  2. MiniPCI R52Hn x3 (all Three goes into single RB433AH)
  3. Sector Antenna 18dbi x 3 (120 Degree each)
  4. LMR400 cables and other required equipment etc.,

The issue i have now is that when i switch on the RB433AH with all three R52Hn plugged in simultaneously, the router board reboots continuously. I learnt it was due to power issue.

We have tried with two types of power adaptors (24v with 1 Amp, and 19v with 3.4 Amp), the problem remain the same. When we unplug two of the R52Hn cards, and plugin any of the one R52Hn, the RB433AH works flawlessly.

Kindly clarify that single RB433AH will handle three R52Hn all plugged in simultaneously; if YES kindly let me know the OPTIMUM power adaptor voltage and ampere configuration I have to use for consistant working.

Thank you!

RB433AH can give maximum of 16W to extension cards.

R52Hn maximum power consuption is 7W

As result: 3x R52Hn uses 21W, board can give them 16, so you have 5W missing.

If you want to use all 2 of them you will have to reduce TX power. But that has to be checked on site with cards at hand with what settings this setup will start to work.

edit: also should add that 3 high power cards does not fit tightly into the slots, that way it can loose contact and damage slot it self. Best advice is to use 2 high power cards and one low power card in the middle.

Hi janisk

Thanks for your quick feedback,

As per your suggestion, if i put two R52Hn cards whose MAX output is 7 WATT each and the board supports up to 16 WATT to all add-on cards, the remaining will be just 2 WATT for the third card. Could you pls suggest me the best suitable MiniPCI for the middle slot as far as my RB433AH is concerned, and also let me know the right power input configuration.

P/S: if i were to reduce TX power of my R52Hn cards what will be the optimum value if suppose 50 users are using hotspot simultaneously @ DL 512/UL 256 kbps.

Thanks

The R52H is only 3 watts max. But it has the little tiny connectors rather than mmcx.

ADD: Are you certain that is the whole challenge? The R52Hn uses less than a watt at idle (0.4W actually). What power supply are you using? Voltage and current rating?

The power adaptor i use 24V with 1 Amp. I suspect it as a sub-standard quality, though (system health print shows 25.3V).

Could you suggest me the best suitable MiniPCi with MMCX connector for RB433AH board and i want to use all add-on slots, and the MiniPCI must be within the power limitation of RB433AH board itself. At present i don’t have intention to use N range, so support of B/G is enough with MMCX connector.

Have you removed the wireless cards from the Routerboard and insure it boots?

Yes, the Routerboard works perfectly with single R52Hn plugged in, and i could transmit and receive data without any problem, but the reboot issue araise when i insert the second & third Cards., this was addressed by janisk /..As result: 3x R52Hn uses 21W, board can give them 16, so you have 5W missing.

I wish I could say “YES! There is a R52Hm”, but there isn’t. :frowning:
The closest I could get with mmcx is the Ubiquiti XR series. I still use R52H with the u.fl (Unbelievably F**king Little) connectors.

Thanks, Can you Pls review (R52n-M), i highly expect your affirmative feedback regarding R52n-M will be the proper match for RB433AH. (pls refer the attached spec of R52n-M for further info.)

i dunt think R52n-m is available in market

Hmm… I do understand the power limitation that doesn’t allow using three R52Hn at once. But then why it still reboots with only two of them?
Do these cards draw more than the specified 7W or RB433AH regulators cannot even handle 14W of power?

power regulator is known to be stable enough, so we can assure that you will get those 16W out to addon cards.

i have a rule for myself - never power up high power card without antenna connected.

So check one by one, if different ports if cards are working properly. @ cards should work without any problems. At least sample of RB433AH on my table does.

hello.
I had a similar problem.
1 rb433 2 r52hn.
The routerboard works whit single r52hn plugged in and “frozen” or reboot when plugged in the second r52hn…

i did several tests and 1 r52hn was warming up very much and was “freezing” everything.

this r52hn works only 10-15min and “to boil”

i am looking for a solution, the r52hn is new!!! :frowning:

use r52hn with single slots on rb 433ah or rb 411ah ..they work a charm

I Suggest to use 2 miniPCI
1 for input
1 for output
and Create a Virtual AP for another one.
if need more AP just create Virtual AP again.

It Works on my RBB433 with 2 miniPCI with 3 Virtual AP.

we have the same problem with the rb433ah and r52hn cards and r5h cards
as soon as we put in 2 cards the rb433ah are dead and dont even boot but with 1 card it works fine
