RB450G: Need help configuring StrongVPN using L2TP

My Device: RB450G with OS v5.4

I recently purchased a StrongVPN account so I can have an American IP address while living abroad. I have successfully used the VPN service on multiple devices; iPod touch, netbook and home computer. However, my ultimate goal would be setting up my RouterBOARD to automatically establish this link so all clients on my home network have access to the VPN tunnel.

I have configured the PPP interface as a L2TP client but each time I try to connect I keep seeing “tunnel XX entering state: wait-ctl-reply” eventually nothing happens and the connection is terminated. Can someone please provide some suggestions on the best way to approach this?

Thanks

Depending on your end goal there are a few ways to do this. What I have done is with them I have a pptp account.

My default GW is set to a Distance of 2.
I static route all the things I want to go out strong to my pptp interface with a distance of 1.
So when my pptp is up and working all my static routes go out strong and when its down they go out my default GW.

The one thing that took a long time to track down was the MTU on my pptp was set higher than 1400. As soon as I found a post dealing with that and set the MTU to 1400 everything worked perfect.

I setup a SSTP connection with StrongVPN and built static routes for my tablets and Apple TV; it works ok but I’m still having some problems. I’m weary to add any of my laptops or PCs to a static route in the event my wife downloads torrents off the internet. :} StrongVPN has been known to work very closely with DMCA and they even have a DMCA tab on users account profiles so you can see whether or not there has been a complaint/investigation lodged against you.

My problems:
The tutorial provided by StonrVPN, http://strongvpn.com/setup_mikrotik_pptp.shtml , is quite helpful. The setup guide does instruct users to change MTU and MRU to 1400 and I changed MTU but I can’t seem to find where MRU can be changed on my RB450G. Any suggestions?

Secondly, I am having problems reaching Netflix or iTunes from my Apple TV when routing over my StrongVPN SSTP connection. Netflix and iTunes work fine from my iPad or windows clients, it only seems to be a problem when I try to access these services from my Apple TV via the SSTP client setup on my Mikrotik. I even changed servers to acquire an IP address in a different geographical location in the US but this didn’t seem to help. I suspect Apple may block known VPNs or proxies when using Apple TV. Does anyone have any additional knowledge about this issue?

Thanks

Well, I know for a fact that Apple blocks known VPN providers from the Apple Store’s WiFi network, for what that’s worth. It wouldn’t surprise me if they did the same for inbound traffic to their services, especially if purchasing is involved, as VPNs and proxies can interfere with automated fraud prevention systems used in transaction processing. (If they don’t get a geolocation that makes sense, you’re a bad risk, for example. )
