RB450G temperature monitoring

We have two sites that have an RB450G in an outdoor cabinet that has a thermostat that kicks in fans at or above 50°C.

What we are finding is that one of the RB450G’s is reporting a rather high temperature — today over 65°C, and during the week up to 72°C, despite having felt the case to be cool to the touch on the same days I looked at those figures. Using an infrared temperature probe, the ventilation holes on the RB450G case are no hotter than about 35°C.

Indeed in where another RB450G has a similar feel to the touch, it is reporting just over 40°C. Obviously as these “room temperature” figures are not above 50°C, the fans aren’t kicking in.

How accurate would you suggest the temperature monitor is on the RB450G?

The only reason why we have gone for the RB450G over any other switching hardware is due to the built-in temperature monitoring, which is rather critical to keep an eye on. If it’s inaccurate, then that is quite risky.

it is accurate, but it’s measuring CPU, not an ambient temperature, or at least probe is very close to the CPU. If ambient temperature is +10°C, then RB450G shows about +40°C, so it’s significantly higher. I think, the temperature probe is more for monitoring device’s health, not for climate observations.

I would suggests lowering thermostat kicking temperature to 35°C.
50°C is way too high inside outdoor cabinet. Maybe there is not immediate danger, but sooner or later capacitors etc. will gone bad (dry) at those temperatures.

I can agree to everything netmaster said. Make the fan kick in sooner as to keep your device healthy for a longer time.

No, there is no fan connector. Discussion was about external enclosure fan.
