RB500 with PoE problems

I have a problem with RB500 PoE in conjuntion with 3com 2226-PWR switch. The router remain off and no ligth blink. With normal external power injector device all running good.

Have you any idea about ? there are compatibility problems with switch
that we use.

In my experience, it is always a good idea to make sure of the following:

Make sure the device (radio/board) plugs straight into the PoW and then into the switch on the uplink port or a normal switching port, it all depends on the setup. (Just in case you are new :slight_smile: )

After that, if you are still not getting a link light, the problem may be as simple as a bad cable or a bad port on the switch. Technically there shouldn’t be a problem connecting to a switch and getting a link light unless it is a smart switch and the port is disabled.

Technically This should be a simple problem to fix… “technically”

u must switch jumper on rb 500 to use PoE , default set is for external power.

look at the rb near power connector u will see 2 pairs of jumpers , next to them is written how to set it .
one pair is for voltage control
second pair is for poe setting

u cannot use poe and external power at this same time

The jumpers are setted correctly, i have an impression that fails load recognition phase of 3com PoE switch. nobody have experience with PoE switch in conjunction witch rb500 ?

on one of my rb532 i had the poe ethernet port randomly die, it runs fine off 12v power directly pluged in though.

Yeah, I’ve been getting reports from customers that the POE port in the 532’s they have are failing. Most of the failures I’ve heard of, just the ethernet part dies, you can still use the port to power the unit.

I’m wondering if that new chip they used might not be more sensitive to static than the one used in the RB2XX series.

we haven't tested the 3com 2226PWR with the RB500 but we have tested
it with several Accesspoints.

The problem is the Switch. Its really cheap for a 24 Port PoE switch but not compatibel with every PoE device.

It doesn't even work with 3com PoE Accesspoints !!!

If you have a PoE installation to do, you should check the compatibility in advance, if it's compatible you can really safe money with that switch, if not
take something from PowerDsine.

In the case of failures, from what you say do we assume the ethernet interface is being destroyed permanently - i.e. a power cycle doesn’t bring it back?
Were the boards installed outdoors, i.e. risk of surges/lightning etc?

I have seen this before with other non-POE equipment, you can get large transients when plugging in a cable, possibly including static discharge, and on a bad design it can destroy the port.

Perhaps best to share the experiences here.
I have a couple of RB532s on test indoors but no problems. Outdoors “up a mast” is what should scare most users and product designers.

There are such things as Ethernet surge suppressors but none of the boards I’ve ever seen use them. We designed them in on our laser links because they are almost always outdoors - but no-one else seems to bother. Not sure why.
