RB5009 and 2Gb/s internet speed

Hi!

Currently, I have an RB5009 router that functions as a switch and router. I have increased my internet bandwidth to 2Gb/s. Unfortunately, I can’t utilize this speed because the RB5009 has 1Gb/s ports. Would the solution be to buy a switch with 2.5Gb/s ports and connect it to the RB5009 by aggregating at least two ports on the RB5009? If I’m thinking incorrectly, please help me find the right solution.

Yes, I am aware of that, but I have 5 endpoints that need a speed greater than 1Gbps to the Internet.

SFP+ port from RB5009 to SFP+ port on switch and then use the 2.5gb ports to your five devices.

If his ISP isn’t using the SFP+. Mine does - I have one DFP-34X-2C2 plugged there.

One thing I think Mikrotik should do is make EVRYTHING “desk mounted” passive cooled. Devices made for rack, not so much. But everything not rack-mounted by default should be considered as “consumer will put it beside the bed - no bright lights and zero noise is a must”. Dim lights are ok (even bright ones, if we can disable them), but absolutely NO fan.

Put a fan header and make the cuts on the case, by all means. But passive cooled - even at the cost of huge external radiator.

His speed he stated was 2Gig, and thus I assumed he would use his 2.5 gig port to the ISP modem.
However it should be possible to connect his sfp+ port to the ISP modem if thats the only viable option and his 2.5gig port to the switch (any of its 2.5gig ports).

Some ISPs accept the GPON adapter directly on the device. That’s what I’m using. Granted, it’s unusual.

I only said that because sometimes inexperienced users - used to artificial limitations of another brands - may think that we have to use this one port, and not just anyone we would like.

Your best option here is to replace your core switch to one with multiple 2.5Gbs ports and an SFP+ port, and uplink it to the RB5009 using SFP+ (10Gbs). Then, use the RB5009’s 2.5Gbs port to connect to the fibre ONT.

Realistically for Mikrotik that switch would be the new CRS326 but it aint cheap.

First: There is no core switch, he has an RB5009 which acts as both Router and Switch for his purposes.
Second: The stated need is for FIVE PORTS to have greater than 1gig capacity.

Why do you propose a switch costing $999 US, providing 20x2.5 ports and 4 xcomb0 (Spf+/2.5 ports), when the CRS310-8G+2S+IN
is available that provides 2xSfp+ and 8 x 2.5 ports, costing $219 US ???

1 ISP port of 2Gb/s and a requirement for 5 internal ports also able to use 2Gb/s ?
That makes 2Gb/s on one end yet (theoretically) 10Gb/s on the other end ? I sense a bottleneck coming …

Anyhow, easiest is indeed to place a small switch somewhere in between being capable of using all ports at 2.5Gb.
1 ether port on RB5009, one SFP+ port so potentially 2 ports on RB5009 which can handle input and output.
But you will be limited to 2Gb/s total throughput towards external ISP, whatever way you try to do it.

There are options costing far less then CRS310-8G+2S+IN.
Search Serve The Home, they have a rather extensive review list of managed and unmanaged switches going as low as 55 USD.

The point being is that the OP wants to be able to utilize the full amount of 2.5gb at any of those ports.
Sure if there are other users on the same port or different ports, the throughput will be less but the potential exists.

The only managed 5 Port 2.5gb is a chinese special. No thanks.
There are no 8 Ports managed…

Thus this link supports research done on my own, there are no viable managed 2.5gb 5 port or 8 port, switches yet worth buying.
I like netgear especially with lifetime warranties for example. Also like TPLINK, I can buy locally or via amazon.ca etc locally and return a defective switch with ease.

So the assumption is that:

  • ISP comes into RB5009’s 2.5G port
  • SFP+ on RB5009 goes into one of CRS310’s SFP+ ports (using a cheap DAC)
  • All 2.5Gbps devices go into CRS310
  • All remaining devices can go into RB5009’s ports 2-8 or CRS310’s remaining 3 ports

This gives you the most LAN throughput from any device to any other device, while also supporting the ISP’s full 2Gbps.

If the ISP gives you fiber handoff (and you’re inclined/allowed to put the ISP’s SFP+ or GPON module into your own router), you could have it go into RB5009’s SFP+ port and plug one of the CRS310’s 2.5G ports into the RB5009’s 2.5G port. All devices have to share the ISP’s 2Gbps connection anyway, so the 2.5G between the switch & router isn’t a bottleneck for Internet-bound traffic

Keep in mind RB5009 isn’t good for 2Gbit with PPPoE connection.
Real performance with setup in testlab:
RB5009
GPON SFP 2.5Gbps in SFP+ port
PC Connected to 2.5Gbps port with 2.5Gbps NIC
PPPoE connection over gpon to Cisco 100Gbit router, testserver based on current fastest i9 CPU

RB5009 tops at 1.54Gbit with fasttrack on and forced CPU clock at max 1400Mhz
That’s iperf3 test, you will mostly get 1.2-1.3Gbit without tweaks.

Hi Golem, if that is the reality of PPOE connectivity regardless of router, then its the ISPs problem of false advertising.

@GolemPL; like I said in the other thread, there might be something fishy going on with your router config or possibly your ISP. I suggest you open your own thread and export you config to sort it out.

Something is wrong with your test config, the RB5009 has no problem pushing > 2.2Gbps download over GPON in SFP+ port with PPPoE and withouth fasttrack. CPU Frequency Auto. Here are a few screenshots and links:
