RB5009UPr+S+IN to replace pfsense

Hi,

for some time I’m thinking about using the RB5009UPr+S+IN as the router/firewall for my homelab and replacing my pfsense. With the actual licensing changes of pfsense+ I’m thinking about this even harder.

As I’m a beginner with Mikrotik devices I kindly ask for your opinion of using the RB5009UPr+S+IN as a replacement for pfsense.

Right now pfsense is used for:

  • basic firewall to get the networks up
  • 4 vlans
  • 4 dhcp server for the 4 vlans
  • 2 vpn-client connections (wireguard)
  • 1 zerotier
  • 1 wan for the vpns and zerotier also
  • 1 wan for streaming (gateway for streaming vlan) with individual dns-server

Can this be done by or with the RB5009UPr+S+IN with regards to the hardware etc.? Any other recommendation that is not breaking the bank?

Kind regards,

Tom

Yes, RouterOS can do all this. You can choose whichever hardware you think best. If budget is a concern with the rb5009 then perhaps check out the L009UIGS.

Why would you recommend the L009 for example when not even knowing the throughput requirements of the WAN connection(s)???

Right now I do use a 500 Mbit/s connection from my ISP. For my homelan I do use 10Gbit connections. That’s one reason for me to use the RB5009 with its SFP±port.

With ‘breaking the bank’ I meant that it should not be that much more for the router…

The 5009 will easily handle tthe 500MBps ISP connection and should also be able to grow to up to a 2.5gig fibre wan connection.

( The L009 for example, with a few filter rules will not provide you with full 500Mbps throughput )
