RB532A upgrade problem

Hello:

We have a RB532 that had 2.9.5.1 installed and working fine. We decided to upgrade to 3.1.0. The upgrade went fine. Next we decided to upgrade the bios to 2.15. The board no longer boots. We hear the two beeps, but it gets no further. We re-upgraded using netinstall, the upgrade was sucessful again, but still the board will not boot. It gets stuck at “Starting Services”. How can we downgrade the RouterBOOT booter from 2.15 ? Or is there some other procedure for making this board boot again?

Thanks,
Dan

If you hear two beeps, it means that board is booted up.
Try to change baud-rate, use 9600 or 115200, even better if you try MAC-Winbox to access the board,

Hello:

Thank you for the reply. Maybe I did not explain myself very well.

Not necessarily, we hear the two beeps, but the board is stuck at “Starting Services”.

Try to change baud-rate, use 9600 or 115200, even better if you try MAC-Winbox to access the board

We have serial access to the board and can access the boot menu etc. We can watch the board start booting up. The problem is, after the two beeps, in the serial console, it hangs after the serial console prints “Starting Services”. Winbox is of no use at this point, the board does not respond to Mac connects. When we use netinstall to reflash the firmware, in the serial console, after it creates the RSA keys, it then beeps twice and hangs again after printing “Starting Services”. We have tried flashing 2.9.46, 2.9.51, and then back to 3.1.0, still no go.

Is there a way to downgrade the bios or bootloader from 2.15 back to 2.14 or something else? Is this possible using the serial console boot menu?

Thanks,
Dan

Just try to reinstall RouterBOOT 2.15 (works fine here on lots of RB/532 with RouterOS 3.10) with a serial connection during boot process of the board. This may help.

Lutz:

Thanks for the reply. Do you know of a download link for just the RouterBOOT images and some docs on how to do this?

Regards,
Dan

I finally found some docs here http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/RouterBOARD_500 to reflash the Bios on the RB500 series boards.

Thanks, for the replies.

You can donwload the actuall RouterBOOT for each kind of RouterBOARD at http://www.routerboard.com/comparison.html.

Press any key during startup of the board, so you will come into the section with the RouterBOOT settings. Then follow the given commands.

Hello:

We are still having problems with this board. I managed to get the board to take a different BIOS (RouterBOOT 2.9) following the instructions in the previous post. The board still hangs at “Starting Services”. I cannot find any download links for RB532 RouterBOOT images at http://www.routerboard.com

Can anyone suggest what I can try next? Where can I download the newest RouterBOOT bios image? Anyone?

Thanks,
Dan

RouterBOOT booter 2.9

RouterBoard 532A

CPU frequency: 399 MHz
Memory size: 64 MB

Press any key within 2 seconds to enter setup..
loading kernel from nand… OK
setting up elf image… OK
jumping to kernel code
Starting…
Completing installation, this may take a minute:
processing console information … done
Installation complete
Generating SSH RSA key…
Generating SSH DSA key…
Starting services…

Okay, what happens if you now install RouterOS 2.9.51 or 3.10?

Maybe you need to format the NAND before installing the new RouterOS Version with Netinstall.

Did you do the full memory test, making sure that its not bad hardware.

short of that, even though the BIOS comes up at 9600, maybe the installation is putting the OS at 115200, just worth a shot.

Hello:

Formatting the Nand and re-installing 3.10 fixed the problem. After 3.10 was installed, I upgraded the bios from within WinBox and it worked this time.

Thank you for all the replies and help to get this board back into service.
