RB750 poor ping performance

Hello, I am a beginner with routerOS. I have an RB750 and am trying to share a VSAT Internet connection between two parties. I have it set up with two physical Ethernet interfaces, each with a Hotspot assigned, and am limiting traffic for each of these two “customer” networks using Queues. Note these are wired networks, not wireless.

I have the basic functions working but performance seems very poor even with only 3 users logged on, and data rates are very low (the VSAT link is only 256/128 10:1).

One symptom is a very slow lossy ping performance when the router is doing work. If you reboot and connect, you can ping the interface <1ms 100%. But if you monitor the pinging whilst logging a user on and then surfing the Internet, it drops to 50% or less and ping response times of 200-500ms.

Someone told me that the RB750 has insufficient memory but another expert said rubbish, the sort of loads I have described above would be minuscule for it.

Appreciate any help!

I haven’t worked with VSAT systems but the latency you describe sounds normal for satellite based internet.

Even though you are only pinging the interface, perhaps it is the queues that are making you wait.

Thanks for the reply.

I am not talking about pinging from the outside over the sat link, you’d expect long response times of course for that. It was a computer wired to any of the LAN interfaces.

Turned out i made a mistake in my config settings with a wrong Ip address hidden away somewhere, when I found it it works great! Now even when I have many users the ping time local) is always only 1-2ms

you might want to check the cpu load of the device and how many firewal rules inside. try to prioritize icmp echo and echo reply in queue and check if it helps, if yes, then it’s the load, rb750g is better
