RB750GL for big house - configuration

Hello,
im going to make internet installation in 2-storey house. 4 Cat5e cables are in wall sockets. They all end at attic. What i want to do is place gigabit ethernet router at the attic which will be also DHCP server. On the attic will be ISPs ethernet socket also. So near the cable router at the attick we have 4 cables that goes to wall ethernet sockets all over the house and 1 cable from ISP (internet).

There will be two wifi APs(dhcp disabled, probably RT-N56U) connected to the wall ethernet socket(dhcp disabled).

My concern is. Is RB750GL or RB450G better for this setup? I want it to be very stable and able to handle big traffic inside that gigabit LAN. It would be great if i could make some easy adjustments that would enable me to filter unwanted content from selected devices (children u know).
Option to control time of internet access for every MAC adress would be great too.
Wider temps of work will be advantage too.
I would also like to have simple firewall (public IP) that will not be hard to configure and wont block any common services for users.

Which of this devices will be better for this installation? Are they proper for this use at all? I think of MikroTik because i couldn find any stable and cheap gigabit router here in Poland.

How much it takes to configure WAN(dhcp client) and LAN(dhcp server) + 4 gigabit ethernet ports together as a switch. Is this basic configuration hard for experencied IT guy but unexperienced with RouterOS?

Please forgive my english. I will apreciate Your help very much.

Thanks

450G is the best choice for you. you can configure DHCP client on one interface and you can also able to run DHCP server on other interface. You may also able to filter content and url filter for children PC very easily using Mikrotik Router OS. also you will able to mac based control and bandwidth manage also possible.

Hello
I already got rb750gl cause it was cheaper and available.

Is it going to lack features You mentioned? What I have figured out is that I can have easy adult sites filtering only via OpenDNS but since I’m gonna have dynamic IP on WAN it is not possible until opens releases IP updater script for router os…

Please note MikroTik Router OS feature are same in all model of router board, but the capacity of handling bandwidth and IP packet and some router board has wireless feature and some don’t have wireless feature. 750GL don’t have wireless feature.

Yes I know it does not have wifi. That is why I choose it. No point in access point on the roof. How much traffic can 750gl handle?

We don’t recommend more than 10mbps bandwidth on RB750GL

What? Are You serious? 10 megabits? I can’t believe it. Like 1 percent of its Gigabit interface speed? it makes no sense

10 mbit is very conservative. You can handle 30mbit easily with a basic config 951-2n which is less powerful then the 750GL. I think it depends if you use queues, proxy, etc which will use more cpu. The more complex you get, the less bandwidth the hardware will be able to handle. This bandwidth we are referring to is the routing aspect, not switching, so if you want lan to lan at gigabit speeds, this should not be a problem as long as you use the integrated switch chip(and do not use any switch filters).

I think some have recommended up to ~70 mbit connection for a 450G, and I am assuming this is with queues enabled. The 450G or 2011 series should be able to handle the same amount of routing bandwidth, with the 2011 providing 5 gigabit and 5 fast ethernet ports.

Thx for explanation.
In this setup it is going to be simple. 3-4 firewall rules, dhcp server, up to 10 devices. thats it. I need gigabit switching only. I would like WAN to handle 50 megabits.

My ISP installed this router in one of our offices with 60 employees. We have a gigabit connection and use the router only for routing. According to the speed test provided by the internet infrastructure foundation in my country, this router performs more than 750 Mbps.

Thank You for this info. That satisfies me 100%.

Can you tell how much is CPU% and if it is getting too hot?

I’m talking about enable web proxy and all unwanted site drop, enable simple queue and firewall then CPU usages goes high. but if you don’t enable web proxy and do for simple routing then higher bandwidth can handle without any problem.

Hi,
Check this link http://routerboard.com/RB750GL you can see Performance test results.

Brother Saleh,

Check attach image of RB450G, bellow 3MB bandwidth load but CPU usages 70%, Giga bit transmission is possible but in real life corporate scenario firewall, queue list and routing all are in same router so CPU goes high!!! It’s purely depends on how you use/configure it.

Yes, It’s depends on how you configure.

Sorry I do not have access to this router, but casing of the unit is cold.

I have a 60/30Mbps connection at my house and use a 750GL with simple queues. CPU usage is very high, but seems to function okay. Don’t plan on using a bunch of rules or it’ll definitely limit the bandwidth it can manage. I have a 2011UAS on order to replace it because of this. I am configuring a PTMP setup for my neighbors on a separate subnet (and queue) and surely this 750GL (even as awesome as it is) won’t be able to handle all of those queues.
