RB750UP PoE not working with IP camera

Howdy,

I have a MikroTik RouterBoard 750UP and a TRENDnet TV-IP310PI camera and I can’t seem to get the camera to receive power from the Routerboard.

The 750UP is configured as a basic switch with PoE set to auto-on for the LAN ports. I connect my camera and the RB port LED flashes red, PoE status on the port alternates between “powered on” and “current too low”.

The 750UP power adapter is 24v, and docs say the unit can do 500mA per port (12W per port). The camera specs say it’s 802.3af compatible (so 350mA) and requires only 5W, so what gives?

Thank you

Your Camera is 802.3af spec and is expecting 48V DC on the PoE port and not 24v DC as you may be feeding it through the Mikrotik switch. The issue is not about the current/power, its about the excitation voltage which must be a minimum of 44v DC.

If you insist on using the 750UP, then you have to power it through a good PSU, say 12v, 2A spec and extract the power off the ports to feed directly to the 12v port of the Camera.

Thank you for the reply! I’m using the power adapter that came with the 750UP - the label on the adapter states 24v - 2.5A output. Shouldn’t that be enough?

If you chose to extract the DC power from the ‘PoE out’ of the 750UP device, you will need exactly 12v supply and not 24v since what goes into 750UP is what comes out of the PoE and you have to feed the output directly into your Camera through the 12v input power port of the camera.
