Device Model = RB751U-2HnD
Serial Number = 2E3E0109FE04/132
I originally go this device for going to the Las Vegas MUM convention in 2011. When i originally go the device it would crash frequently and require a reboot when using wireless. Frustration caused me to put it in a box and not mess with it. Flash forward to today, Thinking that enough time has passed that a firmware update would be out. i downloaded routeros-mipsbe-6.0rc5.npk and dragged the file onto my winbox interface window. Winbox placed the files on what i believe is the root of the storage memory. I looked around the interface to see if there was an Upgrade option that i could point toward the file. Not finding one i rebooted the device and after a minute or so the device reboot and seemed to be using the new firmware version. Winbox showed color icons and showed the latest version of software was running on the device. I noticed in the wireless interface section that the wireless card was not showing up. figuring the device may need a config reset i found an option under system that did so. my winbox connection died as if rebooting to reset config and since then i have been unable to connect to my router . I tried using net install to PXE boot the router from my laptop. making sure firewall was disabled. Using the found here http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Netinstall i have been unable to get this router to talk to me. its like a horrible girlfriend that is mad at you but wont say why and instead sits on the couch with her arms crossed while i try to have fun playing teamfortress 2. How do i get my delicious Routerboard to talk to me again? do i place chocolate.zip on a thumb drive and plug it into the usb port?
For a start you installed a pre-release version of the SW, so I guess sympathy from many members may be a little lacking.
Where you accessing the router via IP or Mac address. if IP it would have reset it 192.168.88.1 I believe, but try access via MAC.
Also try different LAN port for the connection.
I myself have had a love hate relationship with my Routerboard over the years, But I have to say recently much more love than hate.
I think our sympathy may be a little more forthcoming as I know from what I saw today that ROS6.0rc5 was posted on the downloads page and the link at the bottom (all stable files) has been offering ROS6rc4(and maybe 5 today) and that ROS6rc4 has been the default when you open up the download page sections and for a short time today it was ROS6rc5 so for anyone not paying very close attention it would appear to be the current stable version for people to use. (Note: especially with it specifically called stable version at the bottom of the page and 5.22 called legacy)
That being said you are right about the default setup address of 192.168.88.1. I have also recently noticed that sometimes if I have my Wi-Fi turned on at the same time as my ethernet (even if the Wi-Fi isnt connected to anything) that winbox fails to connect over mac address. Try disabling your Wi-Fi adapter and then try using the winbox list to connect to the mac address with the default username and password.
You could also try forcing netinstall mode again using the reset button and then netinstalling either 5.22 (legacy / stable depending on where you look) or try again with 6. But I would disable your wifi card to test that little oddity as well.
I had a customer drop one of our 751G-2HnD ones the other week. They now have a replacement and have been billed for breaking one of mine, destroyed the PEXT port snapped one metal leg for power but has also damaged the board I think as I power it from my 750UP and it runs for 10-15 seconds and then all lights come on and it reboots. I may try force a netinstall and maybe try it with an injector and see if its tripping the protection in the 750UP.

So far these are the things i have tried to get this unit to essentially be un-bricked
Setting my laptop Ethernet card to IP-192.168.88.2 / SUB-255.255.255.0 /192.168.88.1 GW Then attempting to load 192.168.88.1 via web browser / webmin / mac address lookup on webmin. None of these yield any results. i tried this while plugged into port 1. then again while plugged into port 2. neither works.
The dhcp server does not work on port 2-5 so i am assuming that the default config is fully erased or the device is not fully booting.
I have tried many methods of getting this board to do a net install. so far nothing i have done has gotten the RB to actually attempt to PXE boot from my laptop. I followed the instructions for netinstall on the mikrotik wiki. The device just seems unreachable. Holding the reset button down while connecting the power cable, waiting for the activity light to stop blinking and then releasing the button does not seem to cause the routerboard to go into PXE mode. I have not even been able to attempt to put routerOS 5.22 stable on this device as it never shows up on my list of available device to install to. I attempted the same netinstall steps while my laptop was plugged into port 1 or 2. neither worked.
The LED’s on the mikrotik are not blinking as ive seen happen with other units only the power LED is lit, The wireless LED is always off. If i plug my laptop into any port on the mikrotik it takes about 5 seconds for a port LED to light up signaling that something has been plugged into X port. The routerboard also seems like it takes a long time to boot. where as the other RB750’s i have used seem to reboot almost instantly. After using a stopwatch it seems to take about 45 seconds from the time power is applied to the time the RB will show that there is a device plugged into an Ethernet port.
I tried using a completely different laptop even though i know this one seems to work properly. Attempting to set my ip, or use netinstall as well as using the web interface or winbox yield no results. THis horrible girlfriend of a router continues to not talk to me. Maybe its time to put this thing back in a box and just use a RB750, At least the RB750 is not giving me grief.
Just to clairify the router did boot with the latest RouterOS-MIPSEBE-6.0RC5.NPK, The problem only started after i told the device to reset its configuration.
if you want to fix the cpu-load-high-when-turn-on-wifi-reboot-issue then don’t waste your time. Look at the other thread where they discuss about this issue. ros6 does not fix this problem. We tested latest 5.22 firmware and it is even worst. No one is connected to the wifi and it still reboots.
I am very disappointed with MT right now. Their product had lots of major bugs but it took them long time to fix it.
