I remote manage an installation I did early in 2016. It has a CRS226-24G-2S+ as the main router, a RB2011iLS switch fibre connected to the router and a radio link (2x RB SXT G-5HPacD) to connect another building. There are 6 RB951G-2HnD distributed across all three buildings.
All are running version 6.38.5(stable) - yeah I know, they need updating but this network has “just worked” for the last three+ years.
My issue is that 5 of the 6 RB951G-2HnD have just disappeared - no longer visible in WinBox, no Wifi working, no hardwire working.
The devices appear to be okay - photo shows the correct LED lit, they have been power cycled but still no device functioning.
As this site is in another country, I have to rely upon local people to do things and they have no technical skills.
All 5 RB951G-2HnD seem to have gone off line on Sunday, yet the one working device (at the end of the radio link) appears just fine.
My question is - what do I do now?
I want to keep it simple, and at this time have no idea why these 5 devices are gone.
Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.
I suspect these devices were hacked, hence going offline due to the very old version.
My suggestion will to build a l2 link to the CRs, then connect these faulty ones to crs and do a netinstall across the l2 link
So I try a reset 5sec, and still cannot see it via winbox, then try netinstall, still cannot see the device. Given that all five failed at the same time, and this is in the USA where power is often dangerous to electronics, I now pronounce them dead.
I will get the client to order replacements.
Thanks for suggestion, I have a very secure LAN and thus they would need to be within Wifi range to hack, very unlikely given the location.
Netinstall is a tricky thing even if done locally so I wouldn’t make any conclusions on problems with netinstall alone unless you have a lot of experience using it.
Power surprises should normally only affect the power adaptors, not the devices behind them. But what does happen regularly is that the power adaptors degrade with time as the electrolytic capacitors inside them dry out, so the powered device seems to be OK by LED indicators but doesn’t actually work properly. A replacement of the power adaptor fixes this. It would be really weird if this happened for 5 units exactly at the same time, but if they come from the same lot and it happened during a single extraordinarily hot day, it is still possible. So I’d try to borrow the adaptor from the surviving one of those 6 to try to power the other ones, one by one.
understand, but when reset, both the 5sec and 15sec, and then connected locally to a laptop with both netinstall and winbox the device is not visible via L2.
I now have the new devices on site, so will get them connected in the next 6 hours or so, and see how we go.
I will get them to replace all the plug pack power supplies, just in case they are degraded.
Thanks
