I’ve currently got a RB951Ui-2HnD that I’m running as a router for my home network (with wireless turned off - just running a single Unifi AP currently). It’s running DHCP and DNS for my network, plus doing firewalling/routing duties for IPv4/IPv6.
I’m thinking of upgrading, but I’m not 100% sure what would be the modern equivalent. Is it the hEX Refresh?
If you’re just looking to replace RB951Ui with a newer device, then hEX refresh will very likely do the job nicely. If not for other things due to RB951Ui having only 100Mbps ports.
If you’re looking for a device with increased capacity (for potential future connectivity upgrades), then you should really consider requirements and only later decide on particular device model. hEX refresh seems to be on the lower end of current MT portfolio (regarding performance) with a few gotchas regarding ether1.
ether1 is not connected to switch chip, it’s rather connected to CPU directly. Which means it behaves differently than the rest of ports. When device is used in router mode it’s practically required to use ether1 as WAN interface. And it has some quirks when it comes to congestion handling (one direction might perform extremely poorly when it’s under stress).
I’m not saying that it would behave badly all the time, but in certain scenarios it might surprise you.
