Recently I had to replace a “multi-speed-media-converter” from amazon at a customer-site, because the device failed epicly in terms of performance (it’s x-mas time, so the vendor is NOT revealed).
The provider-cpe (presumedly set to 100MBit/full-duplex) had to be linked to a gigabit-1000base-sx port of a firewall-appliance at another floor.
HexPoE-board came to mind and with a bridge between the sfp-port and an ethernet-port (set to to 100MBit/full-duples and flow-control disabed) I lifted performance from 3Mbit/s to 100MBit/s
Job done ! (since the device is on the internet most of the effort was to secure the RB against all odds)
So my questions was: would that also be possible for a 1Gig-Link ? (perf-specs on the mtik-server might be from eth-2-eth over the switching-chip ? … sfp is connected to the cpu !)
After testing the answer to myself: yes (restriction: no jumbo-frame support)
