Hello,
how can I reuse old L4 licenses from old hardware? I have a tons of unused routerboards (mostly 4xx and 5xx series) with L4 which I would like to reuse in newer hardware. It should be possible based on EU court judgment from 03. 07. 2012 right?
There is no separate license applied to the devices. The device comes preinstalled with software that runs already.
The license costs more than the device itself, so it makes no sense.
You can’t, therefore, move any license anywhere.
Are you sure? Cost of a license is pretty straigh forward
wAP 60G 99 USD
wAP 60G AP 129 USD
L3 vs L4 30USD
RB911G-5HPnD - 49 USD
RB912UAG-5HPnD - 79 USD
L3 vs L4 30USD (actually less, RB912 has some more hardware on it)
Hap series costs about 20USD and all has L4
I am not sure if software costs more and also preinstalled is not an excuse.
I am not a Judge.. but I think based on that Judgement it should be possible.
So you really believe MikroTIk has put a 45USD license on the device and only asks 30US for the hardware?
Price difference has no relation to licenses, like I said, there is no license, the devices differ by functionality and hardware.
hAP mini AP costs 19.99USD all features included: https://mikrotik.com/product/RB931-2nD
When you refer to that court judgement, I think the only matching case within the MikroTik environment is where you have bought an L4 upgrade license in the past and used it to upgrade your device to L4, now your device is defective or unusable due to low performance and you bought a new device.
You want to apply that same L4 license update to that new device (and of course not use it on that old device anymore).
I think that is not possible either, but it may be possible after you talk to the company and explain the situation.
This is not the same as using a device that came with L4 (and which is no longer used) to upgrade a new device to L4.
I think it is reasonable that this would not be possible due to the reasons that Normis explained.
maybe… as I said I am not the judge, but when you buy a pc with preinstalled software (windows, office,…) you can still reuse that license on other pc when you decide to not use it there or when that pc stops working. As i said I dont think that preinstalled is an excuse…
No, You don’t. If you computer comes with Windows OEM, the license is tied to the hardware. Not only this: you have (at least, had) a finite number or hardware changes, before a new Windows license is required. 5, if I remember it right.
Yes, that’s right. Buy a desktop, with OEM Windows. Change the graphics card - that is one hardware change, 4 more to go. Change the sound card: another hardware change: 3 more to go. Change the hard disk: yep, You guessed it: one more change - now only two to go. Change the motherboard… No, You can’t change the motherboard: it is the ONE thing Windows OEM license is tied to. If you lose the motherboard, You lose the license.
And no passing to another person either: the hardware is yours, to do as You please, but not the software.
Yes, I am sure of this. Go read the terms and conditions, from Microsoft. It is all there.
So, to keep this post about Mikrotik:
- When you buy a routerboard, it comes with a license. This license is tied to that hardware, and can’t be moved.
- When You buy an upgrade, it is tied to the hardware too. It will not go anywhere.
- Buy a CHR: now we are talking. If you follow the right steps, this license can be moved.
You may not like it. You may think is unfair. But it doesn’t matter: that’s the way that it goes.
I found this somewhere…
The software company shall not prevent the further sale of its license, and usage of its software, including OEM, DSP and ESD versions. The software company’s copyright is exhausted when its software has been sold for the first time. The individual sale of Volume License and the trading of online transferable licenses are permitted. (C-128/11., EU 2001/29/EG, 28., 2009/24/EK)
btw I just bought a five L4…
