Read SMS without GSM router

Hello,
I have a hap lite router and an ADSL modem/router, I purchased a static IP from my ISP as well.
I want to set up a VPN server using hap lite and connect from out side of local network to my local network. (I think up to here everything is alright.)
However, I also want to access my SMS from my sim card by connecting to hap lite.
It is trivial that this can be done using a 4G/LTE modem router but these modems are very expensive. So I want to ask you if you have any cheaper scenario. I also have an android phone that I can connect it to hap-lite 24 hours if it helps.

I don’t have much experience with electronics, but feel free to share your GSM module-based solutions as well.

If I understand right, you want to read SMS messages from some SIM remotely over VPN? This is not directly MT device topic… You can setup ssh server on Android phone and dump them from sqlite database where are stored or with Termux https://wiki.termux.com/wiki/Termux:API
