Recommended for secondary router

Hi.

Needing advise on the correct model device for the following use case:

Current home router will remain in place, which has no vpn client support.
I need to add a secondary device to serve a vpn client connection and have additional cabled devices attached it to make use of the VPN.

The second device should be able to route through the first home router for general internet connectivity, essentially being a gateway for the second device and wifi for mobile devices. This second device should be able to auto connect to the VPN when powered on (preferred but not a deal breaker).The vpn connectivity will mostly be openvpn based, so support for that is best.

In theory every RB device would do. However:

  • support for openVPN is weak
  • you should look for devices with HW support for encryption … which makes e.g. IPsec fly compared to CPU-bound encryption
