Recover RouterBOARD factory license after Netinstall — private details already sent to support

Hi MikroTik team and community,

My RouterBOARD factory license appears to be lost/invalid after Netinstall.

For privacy and security reasons, I do not want to post the device serial number, Software ID, license key, or support files publicly on the forum.

I have already sent an email to support@mikrotik.com with the required private information and attachments.

Email subject:

“Recover RouterBOARD Factory License after Netinstall - Serial [redacted]”

Could a MikroTik support engineer please check the email and attachments and help confirm the correct recovery procedure?

General non-sensitive information:

- Device type: RouterBOARD

- Issue happened after: Netinstall

- Problem: factory license appears lost or invalid

- Private details such as Serial Number and Software ID were sent by email only

My questions:

1. What is the recommended way to recover a RouterBOARD factory license after Netinstall?

2. Should I wait for MikroTik support before trying “Update/Renew license”?

3. Is there any non-sensitive information I can safely provide here to help identify the support request?

Thank you.

Hello, what makes you think that you've lost the license? Any indications?

As @infabo already hinted: netinstall doesn't "loose" license. So if your license is actually lost, then it's more likely due to failing storage device. You're not telling about device type (which is not really a senstive information) ... but I believe CHR behaves quite differently than actual routerboard hardware.

You also didn't mention ROS (both old and new) and netinstall versions ... again not sensitive information. But if you were trying to netinstall a really old routerboard (probably with ROS versions prior to v4 or even older), then license format has changed and one had to convert it to newer format while running ROS version from a particular version range.

Generally license problems have to be handled by Mikrotik support ... so yes, you should definitely wait for them to respond.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

Here is the device information:

Hardware:

  • Device: RB951G-2Hnd
  • version: [v7.19.3]
  • Type: RouterBOARD

    RouterOS information:
  • RouterOS version before issue: [v7.19.3]
  • RouterOS version after Netinstall: [v7.19.3]
  • Netinstall version used: [v7.19.3]

    Issue description:
  • The device became unresponsive and stopped working normally without any configuration changes
  • A reboot did not resolve the issue
  • Netinstall was performed to recover the device

    After Netinstall:
  • The device boots normally
  • However, the RouterBOARD factory license appears missing or invalid

    Important notes:
  • No manual changes to license or identity were made
  • The issue started immediately after Netinstall
